What You Need to Start a Blog

Many people ask what you need to get started in order to make a profitable blog. The answer is nothing, provided that your only goal is to spend no money at all. Now, if you want higher returns and if you have the money to spend, the answer to “what you need to get started” might several hundred dollars to invest in tools that could make your climb to the top faster and smoother.

One of the most important things you will need to get started is some form of keyword research tool or database. Currently, there are dozens of these products on the market, which range in price from free to around $500. The most popular tool on the market is probably WordTracker, which offers a limited trial version for free—or a fully-functional version for $7.50/day or $45/mo. This will allow you to find out which keywords are most profitable and have a reasonable demand (aggregate search)/supply (aggregate site) rating.

Other than a key phrase tool, the answers to the “what you need to get started” question will usually depend on the project. For instance, if you’re hosting a blog and you want to monetize it with Adsense, you may want to add a thumbnail generator to your “what you need to get started” list. A thumbnail generator will create code that, when inserted in your blog, will generate scraped-thumbnail pictures from related searches on Google images—and will place them next to your contextual ads, increasing the click-thru rate.

In contrast, if you’re planning to sell your own products, you may want to add an autoresponder to your “what you need to get started” list. An autoresponder will allow you to greatly improve your conversion rate by allow you to put all follow-up emails on autopilot, rather than doing them personally or strictly using your salespage.

So what exactly do you need to to get started? Nothing. You can create a profitable blog without paying a cent, but if you want to take advantage of automating tools to further improve your profitability and efficiency, you will have to purchase at least a few tools.

What Does Consumer Behavior Tell Us?

Consumer BehaviorAdvertisers are supposed to be experts on consumer behavior, but you have to wonder sometimes. Though the male demographic was the one that was targeted for the longest time, things have changed. If anything, women spend more money than men, and even when men are spending, they have some sort of input from their wives, if they are indeed married. Some advertisers and companies are good at knowing where the money is coming from, but some others don’t seem to have a clue.

Think about women and the internet. Women and women as work at home moms have control of the spending and a lot of them are make money online. Women work together in a supportive way online and that power has made women online a powerful force. Bravo ladies.

Consumer behavior often dictates the economy. If people feel comfortable to spend, things are very good. There are many different things that can happen to change consumer behavior and sometimes it does not take much. There are exceptions, but when a bad global or national event happens, people stop spending. When they fear for safety or their future, they may horde money. When the unemployment rate is up, people tend to save rather than to spend because they fear for their own jobs. People don’t want to spend when they think they might have hard times ahead.

The companies that do take notice of consumer behavior in woman are the ones that succeed. Though there is still a need to advertise to men, there is just a big a need to get women in on the action. Those commercials that feature half naked women appeal to and work on men, but they turn women off in a big way. I guess if a company is only concerned with male dollars, that will work just fine for them, but the smart company keeps both sexes in mind equally when coming up with advertising strategy and commercial endeavors.

The funny thing about consumer behavior is that it is almost impossible to predict. There are times when experts predict things very well, but they fail just as often. When gas prices shot up a few y ears ago, the consensus was that people would cancel more plans and would drive less often. This turned out to be false. They paid for the higher priced gas and continued on with life. Each summer the prices go up and the experts on consumer behavior make the same prediction and it never happens. That’s what is great about people in general. You can’t predict what they will do in all cases. That is what makes the world an interesting place to live in every single day.

But we do need to learn more about consumer behavior. Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion

Choosing a popular and profitable theme for your blog will determine whether or not you are able to stay in business for an extended period of time. While narrowing down the theme from a list of themes can be a fairly scientific process, choosing the themes on that list to begin with is considerably more experiential.

If you’re planning to market your own products, you may want to start by finding a need, rather than looking at data. For instance, do you know of a pressing need that many people have? Could you provide some sort of substantive solution to that need? If so, would a blog be the appropriate means though which to provide that solution? Something might come to mind immediately, but if it doesn’t, you can proceed with data-analysis as a means of choosing a popular and profitable theme for your blog.

You can start by using a program like WordTracker to begin choosing a popular and profitable theme. WordTracker will allow you to view a list of the 100 or 1000 most searched topics on the Internet.

You can then break this list down into smaller pieces. For instance, if number 10 on the list is “cars” and you have some sort of an interest in cars, you can then take the keyphrase “cars” and search for it on Wordtracker using overture pay-per-click results and demand/supply analysis called “KEI.”

This will tell you two things: it will tell you approximately how hard it is to penetrate your niche; and it will tell you roughly how much money people are making in your niche. For instance, if pay-per-click amounts are high and have a lot of bid competition, that means that people are making a lot of money in your niche, which is why they are purchasing advertising for large sums of money per click. It also means that you can potentially make a lot of money for serving ads for these advertisers via Adsense and YPN.

And there you have it: through data-analysis and need-analysis, you can begin the process of choosing a popular and profitable theme for your blog. If the topic you select is popular, has a good KEI rating, and has a high PPC rating, you know you have a winner.

Britain Going Blog Crazy - Metro ArticleImage by Annie Mole via Flickr

So many new marketers don’t know how to promote a website effectively but instead of learning how they continue to put up web pages, page after page until the task of promoting each page just becomes to tough so they stick to promoting just the home page. That’s not good promoting and eventually they will either give up or take the time to learn how to promote their website pages.

Note… The best time to start promoting your website pages is when you create them. Don’t wait until you have a hundred pages before you start or learn how to promote your website because it just becomes overwhelming at that point.

There are tons of pages on the web that get no attention at all. This is partly due to the fact that the owners don’t know what they are doing but mostly because they don’t have great content to begin with. Too much of the same thing online leads to lots of competition. Those that know how to create great content and learn how to promote a website will move to the top of the search engine results page while others that don’t plan their promotion strategies sink to the bottom.

Always remember that content is king and promoting your website will be have a lot better results if your website pages have plenty of great content.

How To Promote A Website Using Article Marketing.

Article Marketing With Article Underground

Article Underground has the articles that are keyword focused for you benefit.

When I want to promote a page from any of my websites I know that articles that are keyword focused and linked to a page on my website that uses the same or similar keywords is a great way to advertise. Of course the keywords you choose to use will determine how much traffic you get from article marketing.

I spent a lot of time and money converting private label rights articles into useful articles but after a short time I realized that I was wasting so much time converting that the cost of each article would have been less if I had hired someone to write them for me.

I looked into hiring a ghost writer to create keyword focused article and for a few articles they were rather affordable but to get the number of articles I wanted it was still going to cost too much. What else could I do that would accomplish what I wanted, more great content that was just words but keyword focused content.

Then out of the blue I heard about Article Underground and what I heard just made me shake my head. There was no way that Mike Liebner, Article Underground owner and creator, could be offering what he does for the price he does. A membership with Article Underground would cost me less than it would to have just 10 articles written.

Article Underground gives me 400 keyworded articles each and every month, plus so much more but you can read about that by following the links and I will continue showing you how to promote a website.

When I installed WordPress, some time ago now, I wasn’t impressed but really I wasn’t ready for the learning curve, so I continued with my static pages for another year or so. Time has passed and in that time I was never happy with my websites.

I changed them a number of times and was happy for a month but then the newness wore off and I didn’t care for it again.  Well over time I started thinking hard about changing but the work I had put into these sites was staggering so I kept putting it off. Then came the day of change and I haven’t looked back except to ask myself why I waited so long.

I tried blogger.com and have a few blogs there but I didn’t really care for that and didn’t feel I was in full control. Plus I found it hard to get any pagerank and very little income. Probably my fault but still I wasn’t comfortable, so I gave WordPress another shot as it had improved a great deal. I also was using my own domains this time and made that huge step to just start my pages over.

I have been learning more about WordPress blogs as I install it on each of my sites. I am now to the point of earning money online through these blogs. I have to say that learning about WordPress Plugins has made the difference.

I have plugins that allow me to use my affiliate program id and then makes it easy to earn money through my blogs.

I  must mention that I struggled with the change over for months but once I made the decision to do it I did it and I felt so much better, almost instantly. I also had it in my mind that my website stats would take a nose dive for a few days because all my pages were gone and new pages were added as posts with permanent names.

I only noticed things go wacky for maybe a week and of course my income didn’t grow much that week but hey, it was for the best because now it is only a short time later and I am already ahead of the game.

WordPress blogs do have a learning curve if you want to work with the plugins but I am not programmer and scripting scares the pants off me but I started with the first few plugins I search for that would help me earn more money on the internet and they weren’t as hard to work with as my mind had led me to think.

A new friend online has a great saying: “Just do it”

My motto: Knowledge is powerless without action. Without action you’ll be going nowhere.

Give a WordPress blog a try today and start learning how to monetize your websites.

I install my WordPress blog through my cPanel on my domain. From within the cPanel I went to the Fantastico button and the installation took all of two minutes. Just like that I was ready to start posting helpful articles and product reviews that would help people make money or do something better than before. Plus I was immediately able to start adding my affiliate links to point my visitors to products and services that will benefit them and myself.

Blogging and affiliate marketing just go hand in hand. Get started today.  By the way if you don’t have a website yet, you can do affiliate marketing without a website. You can also use blogger.com to have a free blog and do your affiliate program marketing there.

I do have free blogs myself but I use them to point to my own blogs on my own domains. Domains are cheap, less than $10.00 and hosting a domain is as cheap as $5.00 a month. You can have a Wordpress blog setup in less than an hour from the time you purchase your domain and get it hosted.

Planning Your Blogging Profit Plan

Planning your blogging profit plan is crucial part of the construction of any monetized blog. But what does it usually involve? Generally, planning your blogging profit plan consists of two things: working on a traffic generation plan and improving conversion rates.

When planning your blogging profit plan, you may want to work on the conversion side first. If you begin sending traffic to your blog before it is monetized properly, your conversion rates could be too low to earn a significant return on your investment; this is especially true if you are paying for traffic from pay-per-click sources, such as Adwords.

One important thing you must consider when planning your blogging profit plan is how you can improve the quality of your copywriting. If you do not feel that you have the expertise or writing skills to convince someone to buy your product, you may want to hire someone to write your sales page for you.

With the recent boom in freelancing markets, you should be able to find a talented copywriter on elance.com or guru.com for a relatively low price per word or page. If your copy is bad, your conversion rate will also be bad, which means you are wasting traffic.

Additionally, you should consider including pre-selling tactics while planning your blog profit plan. You may want to include such pre-selling methods as giveaways, cash prizes, or some other form of interaction for visitors.

The other important part to consider while planning your blog profit plan is your traffic generation methods. No matter what the topic of your blog, you generally have five basic traffic generation methods: pay-per-click programs, which allow you to pay for targeted traffic; natural search engine traffic, which you can build by optimizing onpage and offpage factors; link-based traffic, which you can build by purchasing links from link brokers; list marketing traffic, which you can build by purchasing solo ads from list-owners; and repeat traffic, which you can build by giving visitors a reason to return and by persuading them to bookmark your site.

All things being equal, you must concentrate on traffic generation and conversion rates while planning your blogging profit plan.

I love ebook resell rights, they are an excellent way to promote your affiliate programs.

Even free ebook resell rights gives me the opportunity to reach my target group and teach them ways how to make money online through personal recommendations and affiliate programs. I personally use ebooks with resell rights to learn more effective ways of earning more income on the internet.

Why limit yourself to one stream of income that could stop at any time leaving you with no online income. Multiple streams of income through ebooks with resell rights is a perfect way to keep that from happening. You may still have streams of income stop but they won’t put in the poor house over night, giving you the opportunity to replace those affiliate programs that just don’t work for you anymore.

An ebook with reseller rights can be as short as just a few pages, even less than 20 pages or it can be quite in-depth and take more than a hundred pages. I have written step by step tips for a specific task that only took a few pages to teach what I wanted to teach and then it’s on to the next short and to the point ebooks with resale rights.

You can write helpful ebooks in one sitting or over time but once they are done they can continue to help you make money on the internet month after month and even year after year.

How to write an ebook in as little as 7 daysHow to Write an eBook Tip #1 – Take Action.

This tip is true for a book or ebook. Get that first paragraph out of your head and onto the computer or paper. Building a new home doesn’t happen no matter how much planning is done until that first shovel full of dirt is turned over.

Take action.

How to Write an eBook Tip #2 – Carry A Notepad and Pencil.

Carry a pad and pencil with you always so you can write down any thoughts that will help you add content that you may have forgotten about. The mind is a strange thing and will pop out thoughts and answers to question you have but of course this happens at the strangest times so if you don’t have a way to write those thoughts down they may disappear as fast as they arrived in your head.

Be prepared for great thoughts and idea…

How to Write an eBook Tip #3 – Chewable Chunks

We humans tend to get overwhelmed which leads to getting nothing done. Our minds will build things up until we really believe the task at hand is impossible. To overcome this we only need to break the process into digestible pieces.

If you decided to climb a mountain would you just start climbing or would you step back and figure out how you are going to climb that mountain? Preparation and planning can make the task so much easier and more pleasant. Even though the process is one step at a time it’s good to know what’s ahead of us so we are not taken off our feet. One step at at a time.

Example: I wanted my older brother to write a short book about his life as a heart patient. Long story short…

My oldest brother walked into a hospital when he was 33 years old and dropped dead on the emergency room floor. If his ride had of taken him home like he wanted we wouldn’t be discussing him now.

He is now almost 60 and is still hanging in there. That wasn’t the only time he died but was revived. He has had numerous heart surgeries, a pace maker and even a new heart. What a story that would be but do you think I can get him to write the first words of a best seller, not a chance.

By taking the first step and then the next and the next you will start building momentum and before you know it you will have your head popping through the clouds and there’s the top of that insurmountable mountain, with a new book ready to publish.

If you look at the big picture too long you will never get started and never experience the joy of typing that last word.

So again keep the task in chewable or digestible chunks.

How to write an ebook or book. How To Write An eBook Tip #4 – How long is a book or ebook?

Don’t get caught up in trying to write a book that is a thousand pages long. You don’t need to be long winded to have a great book or ebook.

So the length of your book would only be as long as it needs to be to tell your story or teach what you are teaching. Any more than that and you are just making pages that may not be necessary.

How To Write An eBook Tip #5 – When is it time for a title?

When I write I write to make money online so for me it’s important to have a title for my article or books that are keyworded so others can find my content in the major search engines. So, for me I start with a keyword phrase and carry that through the title and the entire document I am writing. You on the other hand…

We are not all the same and we don’t write for the same exact reasons.

The title in my mind is the most important part of your book and may require a lot of thought but that should not stop you from getting words on paper, or you will end up like my brother. Almost 20 years later and he hasn’t written the first sentence.

Writing a book or ebooks never happens for most because it gets put off until tomorrow and tomorrow is always a day away so the task never gets done. Don’t let this be you. You have it in you and it comes out one word at a time if you start writing. So…

… how to write an ebook or book? Start with the first sentence…
