When I create a blog and start blogging it’s because I blog for profit so I like to keep tight lipped about where I make my money online.

So, there was a time not too long ago where I wouldn’t dream of sharing the hobbies I make money with online but the fact that I make my money focusing my hobbies locally I don’t mind sharing so much.

What I have found about sharing my hobbies, that works great for me, is to key in on your local area, far less competition that way. Keep that in mind while you think about making money with your hobbies.

1. Turning Your Fishing Hobby into Money

I not only have a passion for fly fishing where I live I have many years of experiences I share with my readers. This hobby has not only allowed me to share and earn but I have also made new friends.

Just this past summer I was contacted by a guy locally, less than 5 miles from my home asking about one of the bass fishing locations I shared about. That contact ended with me having a new fishing buddy.

I can be found on the first page of Google for numerous searches around the phrase fly fishing and our province.

2. Backyard Hobby Gardener Earns Blogging

MY wife and I bought a little spot here in the heart of our city. We even purchased the lot next door so we could start a garden.

I started thinking that if I could make money from my fishing hobby why not start a blog on backyard gardening in our city. So I started a local blog and began sharing our experiences as newbie gardeners.

I had used an existing make money online domain I had purchased a couple years early that didn’t earn me anything.

The blog started earning a little and then more so I thought I would start a second blog on gardening and buy a keyworded domain.

That new domain wasn’t started until a year after my first gardening blog but in less than six months it caught up to my first garden blog.

Now I try to buy keyworded domains for my hobbies. I find it hard to get ones without hyphens but I don’t mind using hyphens. Heck I even have 3 domains now that have double hyphens in the name.

3. Baby Boomer Travel

We are baby boomers and grew up with travel so as we grew up and got married we still wanted to travel.

To this point we have only ever traveled with our son so most places were places with lots of great and thrilling rides. You know the ones that make you toss your cookies.

We are very close to retirement, we have even bought the laptop so we can blog while traveling. I decided to start a hobby travel blog.

I wasn’t sure what to put on the blog as I only had a few posts about our travels to get started with. So, what did I do?

I started using private label rights articles that I get for free and now this particular blog makes more than any other blog I have to this point. And we haven’t really started traveling yet.

Our travel blog isn’t focused locally like our other blogs but we get requests for placing ads on our site and the money just keeps growing. So of course I had to start a second travel site to see if I could duplicate the same results.

4. Horseback Riding

I don’t have a lot of experience in the hobby of horseback riding but I wish that I did. I would love to take a horseback ride to a remote fishing spot with friends to enjoy the scenery and the experience.

I live in the heart of our city and I don’t even have a horse but that’s where private label rights content and eager guest posters come in handy.

I haven’t made any money from this site on any of the banners or ads. I make money on my horseback riding blog from those who desire to pay me to put links on my blog.

For the longest time I didn’t even try to make money online through my hobbies because I listened to so called gurus who either didn’t know what they were talking about or they perhaps were steering people clear to keep the gold for themselves. What ever the reason they didn’t exactly tell the truth.

Eventually I started paying attention to what I thought would work and started blogging about the hobbies I love but never find the time to enjoy like I would like.

I started with my biggest passion, which is fishing, I created a blog and just started blogging about my experiences. Without even working for, like I had to do with my other niches, I started getting readers, more every day.

The thing that really made me sit up and take notices was the ease I could write with but that just makes sense. Go to a guitar jam with me and watch faces light up when you start talking about anyone’s hobbies. They, like myself, can’t shut up about them.

After a few months of blogging I started putting a bit of advertising on the blog and started to earn a bit immediately. Remember I said, after a few months!

The reason I didn’t put advertising on my fishing blog was because I wanted to get as many of my pages into Google’s index before monetizing. My past experience has shown me that sites that have too much advertising and not enough content, good content, will not get as much or as deep indexing, so I wait until I am getting about 200 unique visitors.

After seeing that it was a lot easier for me to earn money blogging about my hobbies, due to my knowledge of course and experience, I started other blogs, even multiple blogs on the same hobby, and built them for a few months before monetizing.

Now my wife is interested in starting her own blog but she wants me to do it all, typical. Okay I was just kidding there, she will do it herself and probably show me up.

My advice for you is to create a blog based on a passion, a hobby or an interest you spend money on. If it’s a hobby or interest that no one spends money on you are going to have a tough time earning so be sure it’s something you know people spend on.

It always amazes me when I talk to people that have no hobbies. How can one go through life without having a few hobbies? It happens way more than most people would think.

These are the people that scratch their head when I tell them I make money sharing my knowledge of the hobbies I so enjoy.

I had a good friend that taught people how to prepare for retirement and his stats show that people with no hobbies or interests don’t usually last too long after retirement.

I plan to live long into my retirement and have plenty of hobbies and interests to keep me going. I also want to continue earning from my hobbies so I can enjoy them even more.

Planning for your future means you can prevent hitting retirement broke and hobbiless.

I have a real passion for fishing and blogging about it helps me earn money. Don’t tell my wife but I am sure I spend more of what I make from my fishing blogs right back into fishing.

We also love to travel being baby boomers and all. Now we have two travel blogs, one earns a nice amount and is growing. The other we started because the first one is doing so well. It needs time to grow before we monetize the second one.

Gardening has become an interest that both my wife and I are enjoying and learning about.

Next I am going to start a blog about guitars but I will seek the help of my friends from our guitar jams to help me on this one as my expertise at this time isn’t quite enough to keep the content growing.

I will most likely look for guest bloggers on that blog.

Get yourself a few good hobbies, create a blog and start sharing your experiences. You can even get started writing reviews of other sites and products that like, just stay on topic.

It’s almost 8:30am, I am on my 4th coffee and scratching my head wondering how I got so sidetracked.

I quit my day job, in 2001, because I was tired of working for others and having no time for any thing other than work. For years my family suffered because I was a workaholic who had no time for anything else.

My goal was to start an online business and make a living where I could set things on auto-pilot and just go fishing. Instead I created a business that took up most of my time and instead of getting any freedom I just created myself more work.

I started by creating a web design business that soon had me earning good money which excited me, but I didn’t realize I had just traded one job for another.

I no longer take on new clients and have farmed out some of my clients to other companies and started to focus more on making money through blogging.

Blogging makes good money and after a year of blogging I again realized I was working my butt off with little time for myself.

Not sure how I got so sidetracked for so long but today it stops.

No I am not quitting, just focusing my efforts so that I earn the most with the least amount of work on my part.

Currently I have 22 blogs. Like I said I make my living online but out of those 22 blogs only 5 are making money, yet I keep working those that aren’t. What was I thinking.

What am I going to do now?

Put Working Non-Producing Blogs on Hold

First, I am going to put 17 of my 22 blogs on hold. I am not taking them down at this point. I will keep them active until I either drop them at renewal time or find a better use for them, but for now, no more work gets put into them.

Find Guest Bloggers

Next I will take those 5 blogs that are producing my income and make them better. I will also focus on backlinks and maybe even a few guest bloggers.

I have already put out a request for co-authors on my horseback riding blog. This will provide me with more content and allow me to put more time into the other 4 blogs. Of course I will most likely be looking for a few co-authors on those as well to lighten my work load.

Once I have all my ducks in a row once again I can concentrate on the blogs I have put on hold to rework them, start them over or dump them.

Do you know how to write an article that pulls in readers like a moth to a flame?  If not, keep reading.  When you start out with article marketing you are told various ways to make an article the best it can be.  Although some are good suggestions, many miss the point.  When we write articles we want them to persuade the reader into seeing our point of view.  When you do this you have a much better chance of them clicking on the link in your resource box.  Below are 6 top tips that you must do when writing an article for maximum impact.

1)  Just like with a headline in a direct response sales page, the title of your article needs to grab the readers attention.Recent studies have shown that when a visitor comes to your site you have just seven seconds to catch their attention before they leave.  This is no different with the title of your article.  If you have an intriguing and attractive title you will gain many more readers for your article.

2)  If you have created a good headline then your reader will now be reading your introduction.  Don’t skimp on this part.  Your introduction needs to keep the readers attention so they continue reading.  A good way to do this is to start out with a question that relates to the purpose of your article.

3)  Next in your article will come the body or the main points of your article.  This really needs no explanation other than try and keep it as interesting as possible.  A good way to do this is with statistical information on the subject your writing about.

4)  Finally you need to have a closing for the article.  In the closing you simply reiterate what the main points are.Now is an ideal time to use words that appeal to the emotions of the reader and makes them more willing to continue forward.  If done correctly they’ll read your resource box and go on to your site.

It is imperative that you craft a compelling author bio box.  This is like the call to action in a sales letter.  Depending on your intentions, whether your article is for SEO purposes or to drive immediate traffic, a well thought out resource box can drive hoards of interested prospects to your site.  Remember this when writing resource boxes, Q.S.A..  Present a Question, provide a Solution, I.E. a product on your site and finally give a blurb about the Author.

So to recap, Q is for question, S is for Solution and A is for a blurb about you the Author.

6)  Make sure that your article sounds and looks professional.  Try and avoid any grammatical errors.  Sometimes grammatical errors are done on purpose for SEO reasons but that’s a whole other article.

The fact that you are getting tons of traffic but still not earning should tell you something about where you are getting your traffic.

People can direct you or tell you how to get traffic like they do but they may not be promoting to the same target group as you unless you are selling similar things. So, the traffic you get may be completely useless.

A Simple Web Traffic Checklist

Content may be king but it won’t pay the bills if it doesn’t draw the traffic that is targeted and with money to spend. So I would like to add that the right type of traffic is king. And you can take that to the bank.

We all know or at least have heard about link exchanges working to get you more traffic, well I disagree, the wrong type of traffic may as well be no traffic.

I also don’t care for reciprocal linking. I don’t think Google cares for it either, it really just says you scratch my back and I will scratch yours and Google and other search engines know this so they don’t seem to give much credit to those type of links.

I do on the other hand love one way links from relevant sites. I tend to use three way links to get around the reciprocal linking strategy.

I don’t take as much time as I probably should using link directories, but I try to add my sites to a new one every month.

If you think about it there are hundreds of link directories that will give you a one way link back to your web site and it’s a great way to keep or increase your pagerank.

My favorite traffic is the organic search engine results from keywords I use on my sites. For those that are not familiar with organic search results they are the results you see after doing a search on any given phrase, that are not sponsored.

Sadly I don’t get as much organic search results as I would like on my blogs but I am getting better at picking the words I use.

Payperclick advertising is a great way to make money online but it’s also the perfect way to lose the money you spend without getting a return on your investment. You really need to know what you are doing to benefit from PPC advertising.

I use my Squidoo lenses to generate traffic to my other web sites. The traffic I get from my Squidoo lenses is pretty much all target traffic.

Commenting on other blogs with relevant and new content so you get the attention of that blogger and their readers. Never leave a small unrelated comment like, great post, as it just makes you look dumb.

Frequent forums that are related to your content. Create a signature file pointing to a relevant site and then start taking part on that forum. When others see that you are adding to the conversation with useful comments they will want to look at your website.

Oh yeah, keep posting great content to your sites so they grow.
