6 SEO Mistakes You Might Not Even Realize

Another view of the south side of the :en:Goog...Image via Wikipedia

Many people who are just starting an internet marketing business have very basic knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) techniques. Beginners want their sites to rank well in the search engines without realizing their sites might be the problem. This article presents 6 SEO mistakes to avoid.

  1. Frames – Many web pages are formatted using frames, especially if a novice page builder built them.   The problem is that search engines have a hard time tracking content inside the frames.Search engines cannot distinguish which frame contains the main content.
  2. Flash – A lot of websites use Flash to make their sites stand out. This might look good, but in terms of SEO, it means nothing. Unless you can generate massive traffic by word of mouth, you should avoid using Flash because search engines cannot read Flash files.
  3. Keyword Stuffing – If you use too many keywords, your ranking can go down. Having too many keywords causes search engines to think that your page is being spammed or that it is artificially created. Search engines want unique content.
  4. Keyword Hiding – This is related to keyword stuffing.  Hiding keywords by making them the same color as your background will cause search engines to downgrade your ranking.  This again has to do with the search engines seeing too many keywords as spam. Search engines do not like to be tricked.
  5. Text Inside Images – Sometimes marketers post images with a caption that is already embedded into the image. It is better to post the image separately from the caption.  The reason is that search engines use something called “spiders” to extract information from your web page. Spiders will assume any embedded text in an image is part of the image and will skip over this text. Captions written in HTML will be read and included by spiders for SEO purposes.
  6. Javascript Links - Make sure all your links are HTML links as opposed to links controlled by Javascript.  The spiders will include those links when they are extracting information for ranking.

When an internet marketer is just starting out, search engine optimization can be a daunting challenge. By avoiding these mistakes, internet marketers will be off to a good start.Avoiding these mistakes as well as implementing other SEO techniques will cause your page to be ranked in no time.

I have stopped promoting AMA(Article Marketing Automation) too many people spamming categories with articles and links that don’t fit the category. I have submitted a support ticket but that was back on Oct. 14, 2009 and not it’s Nov. 23, 2009 and I have not had a response and it’s getting worse.

How to Work Out Keyword Density

Back to the Web album coverImage via Wikipedia

Keyword density is always expressed as a percentage of the total word content on a given web page, It is very important in Search Engine Optimization.

Suppose you have 100 words on your webpage(HTML code used for wrting the web page is not included), and you use a certain keyword for five times in the content. The keyword density on that page is got by simply dividing the total number of keywords, by the total number of words that appear on your web page. So here it is 5 divided by 100 = .05. Because keyword density is a percentage of the total word count on the page, multiply the above by 100, that is 0.05 x 100 = 5%

To get recognized by the search engines, you should make sure that the keyword density is between 3% and 5%. SEO Services provider will also pay attention to this.

Remember that this rule applies to every page on your site. It also applies to not just to one keyword but also a set of keywords that relates to a different product or service. The keyword density should always be between 3% and 5%. The steps to check the keyword density below is simple

# Copy and paste the content from your web page into a word-precessing software pargram, for example, Word and Word Perfect.

# Use ‘Ctrl’ + ‘A’ to select all content and then click ‘Tools’ – ‘Word count’, write down the total number of words in the page.

# Now select the ‘Find’ function on the ‘Edit’ menu, Go to the ‘Replace’ tab and type in the keyword you want to find. ‘Replace’ the word with the same word so that you don’t change the text.

# The system will provide you a count of the words you replaced when you complete the replace function. It shows the count of keyword that you have used in that page.

# You can use the total word count for the page and the total number of keywords to calculate the keyword density.

Remember that some search engines disregard ‘doorway’ sites. So put at least a page of content on the doorway site with some useful information and then link it to your primary site.

Blogging WorkspaceImage by liewcf via Flickr

Well if you answered YES to the question ‘Are you doing a half ass job at blogging?‘ you are not alone, not by a long shot. Stats show that the huge majority of blogs are dormant, because they didn’t do what the owner expected. Blogging is a great way to make money online yet so many bloggers earn zip. Why is that?

1. Lazy Ass Bloggers

Right off the top we need to put LAZY. This of course applies to every area of marketing online. There are so many lazy people that figure they can make a quick buck or get rich quick but they have no clue as to how to do it.

So these lazy ass marketing wannabees just duplicate other sites, some even stealling the content from other successful bloggers. Usually these people give up after they have been caught and told to remove their stolen or duplicated content.

Others just get by with as little work as possible, which in most cases doesn’t included much keyword research giving the site little chance of success. I’ll be the first to admit that I have done this and sometimes it has worked for me but more times it hasn’t.

Now when you they find that the new site they created is doing absolutely nothing as far as earning they leave the site and start another one. I have seen people with 10 or 15 sites all on the same thing and yet none of them are making money.

This is why there are thousands upon thousands of blogs that just take up cyberspace and earn nothing at all.

Clueless Hard Workers

I will put myself right at the top of this clueless section because I spent so much time just spinning my wheels and it’s not because I am lazy. I am far from lazy and was even a workaholic before I had a heart attack in 2004. Even though I am not lazy I am easily distracted which has caused me no end of frustration. I am getting better and more focused but it took a few years.

Think about THIS for a minute. It doesn’t matter how hard you work if you are working on the wrong things. A priority, before creating a blog, is keyword research, yet so many bi-pass this crutial step and then wonder why they don’t have success.

Step back, look at your blog and then ask yourself the following question and be honest with yourself. “Would you stay on your own blog if you had to read what you are producing?”

Like I said I get easily distracted so I do have a number of blogs that are just taking up space and so the answer to that question would have to be NO.

Now the mind can play tricks on us so even though I would admit I would stay on my own blogs my mind would tell me other would so I continued with the blogs even when I should have dropped them or put more research into them to see why they weren’t gettign targeted traffic.

Effective internet marketers know that you not only need a site, but one that ranks well. This allows for more exposure, traffic, and sales.

This article presents 3 big tips for optimizing website content for ranking in the search engines.

1. Unique Content – A lot of people are putting sites out there that are basically clone sites.Search engines are identifying these sites to rank them lower. You should be adding value to the web, not cluttering it up.  What you want to do is provide a site that has good unique content.

Think about it like this: If you’re choosing between 100 sites that look the same and the one site that is different and unique, which one are you going to choose?  The one that’s different or looks even a little better is going to get more hits.  Take some time and think through how you’re going to present your site.  It might take longer to do this, but in the end it will pay off.

2.Good Keywords – The main thing about internet and article marketing is that it’s all about the keywords.A site without the the right keywords won’t rank well.  So how do you find them? There are many free keyword tools, including one by Google.

There are also many pay sites that can tell you how popular a keyword is.The key is to find keywords that generate a good number of searches a month, but don’t have a lot of competitors.  A good guideline to follow is a keyword that gets 200 or more monthly searches, but has 10,000 or fewer competitor sites.Find 20-30 of these if you can.

3.Website Structure – So you have your keywords. Now what?Search engines send out spiders to your site to get the relevant information from it.  Your goal is to make it easy for the spider to extract the relevant information on your site.

You can do this by using a keyword rich title.Use one of your best keywords in the title. If you want to use more than one, separate them using “|”.Use 3 keywords max.  Choose the best ones and let that be the title to your site.

You can also use meta and robots tags.Meta tags go in the header of your site. They are also the place to put your relevant keywords for your site.If you overdo it, though, it will hurt you because the search engines will think you are keyword stuffing.

The robots tag basically gives permission to the search engine spiders to search your site.  Just use “meta name=”robots” content=”all”, and the spiders will spider you site.

Special features of B2B marketing

Supplied by Wood Lathe. Business to business marketing which is also called as B2B Marketing usually pertains to having a business that target a market of other businesses as well. The fundamental methods utilized by business to business marketing are usually like those utilized to reach the target market. The only difference of this from what is common, it that this type of business caters to businesses as wells instead of individual clients.

Business to business marketing may use different strategies or tools to be able to stick with the marketing necessities of a particular business. Business to business marketing may use a traditional method in marketing such as print media and other forms of media, promotional materials as well as being able to build up stronger relationships with the public.

In business to business marketing the focus is on the business side of your clients. The challenge here is that you are looking into a larger group of potential buyers here and more probably attached to a different  type of business. {The question is , when you try producing a business to business marketing plan with this type of business what would it be?In this case you would be using a business to business marketing plan instead of an individual marketing plan.} Well, the initial thing that you should look at is if the company is capable of catering to another business before marketing their services. What is necessary for you to do before administering a business to business marketing program you should understand the capability of this business to cater to a larger scope of audience that are in the business group.

Let’s say that you would like to be able to get more clients through using a business to business marketing campaign you should be able to get the right leads to do so. On the Internet you would be able to come across probably several websites which may lead you to providers of direct mail.

To know to whom will you be  conducting your business to business campaign with, you have to avail of these leads and study more about your target market. You can look for providers that may provide you direct mail listings which you can use for marketing your business and you may be able to avail the lists for a cost.

In utilizing direct mail you can make sure that business to business marketing would give you good results for the fact that you would have access to those who will surely be interested in your business as well as you will be able to estimate the size of your market.  From here you will be able to build up a concept on what potential sales would you be getting and all you have to do next is to be ready with your sales pitches.

I have been using Wordpress for a few years now, thanks to Blogger.com. I now host my 30 or so blogs in a Wordpress platform and host them over 8 different IP addresses.

Why Did I Switch From Blogger.com To Hosting My Own Wordpress Blogs?

At the time I didn’t blog every day, sometimes I would go a week without blogging so when I went to my blog to add content and found it suspended without even getting an email, well I was a tad upset to say the least.

I blog about things like travel, fishing, and gardening so there should have been no reason I would be shut down. Heck I don’t even use swear words. I could believe they had shut me down, without notice, just because someone complained about my site.

It wasn’t so much the fact the blog was suspended, although that really did get under my skin, but it was more the message they left me. They asked me if I wanted to have a human moderator check the site. Well DUH!! I think that would go without saying and should have been done instead of shutting me down.

They checked my site, I think it took a couple more days, and found absolutely nothing wrong with it, so on someone else’s say so they just shut me down and waited for me to find out about it. Boooo

Like I said at the start of this post, I have been running Wordpress blogs for a few years now and have had no issues with them at all. BTW: I have never had a hosting service shut me down or suspend any of my accounts.

Wordpress Blogs Rock

Looking back I really have to thank Blogger.com for suspending my account needlessly, which kind of forced me re-think where I was hosting my blogs as it could have happened again and again without any control from myself.

When I pictured the image of my income stopping over-night I broke out into a cold sweat and decided it was time to look for something else and Wordpress was my choice.

Site Traffic, Jul. 1, 2006-Sep. 30, 2006Image by djwudi via Flickr

Do you ever think about how many sites you visit that just don’t do it for you? Do you ever bother going back to that site, on purpose? I know I try to avoid them if my initial visit is a negative one.

What Turns Me Away From Your Blog

Page Load Errors – The very first thing is the time it takes to load your page. If it’s taking too long I will stop my browser and give it another try. If I still can’t get the page to load I tend to move on unless that information was suppose to be of value. In that case I will bookmark the page and try again later, if I think of it of course.

Visually Hard To Look At

If I get to your page it’s ugly, too ugly to continue, I will leave and make a mental note not to bother returning. They would have to have some very important information to keep me there if it’s hurting my eyes.

Little To Zero Formatting

Arriving at a page that is all text with no breaks just turns me off. At the best of times I am not the best reader but having heading and breaks along with a few images to push points really helps me get through the content. But if the text all runs together without any breaks, like heading, I can’t bring myself to read the entire thing. Something seems to force me to click that back button or move to another site.

What To Do To Imporve

I have taken a step or two back and noticed that I do some of the things that turn me off when I visit other sites so I have made some changes, well I am in the middle of making those changes.

  1. I am keeping my paragraphs shorter and my content a bit shorter as well. I now create 2 or 3 posts instead of just one long post. It’s better for my readers and it’s better for my site because now I have 2 or 3 posts linked together.
  2. I try to keep anything out of my site that may incease page load times.
  3. I notice that I like posts that include images that are relevant so I am now doing my best to find images that match the content of my post. Remember a picture says a thousand words so you want it saying the right thing.
  4. To make things more attractive and easier to scan for those readers, like myself that scan content.

It’s amazing how just a few little changes can make your blog more appealling and you didn’t even have to change the content, just how it looks.

Jack HumphreyImage by Ralph Zuranski via Flickr

For along time I was telling people that I blog as a hobby but in reality I blog about my hobbies and even though I work hard at some of my hobbies they are nothing at all like blogging. So I guess I have to change how I phrase it. I will now say I that I love blogging about my hobbies but that’s it’s my business and not a hobby.

Blogging has become a huge part of my work day. I don’t have sites like some people I talk with who have sites in the hundreds, that’s just too many for my to wrap my mind around, but even with just over 30 blogs I find myself spinning my wheels. Not sure how I would ever handle 50 or more blogs without help.

I know I do a lot of things that waste time, but hey it’s my time right. Seriously I know that if I could increase my productivity even by 10% I would be able to add more blogs or perhaps make more money with the blogs I have at this point.

That’s when I came across a site by Jack Humphrey telling me about a site he has that will help people learn how to be a pro blogger and I think that is just what I needed to move ahead in my business. Thanks for the great info Jack.

If you didn’t follow the link over to Jack’s site you must be making all the money you want eh? Okay just kidding, but take a minute and check out the video there, you won’t reqret it, you may even come back here and leave a comment about it.

I signed up with Jack to get more info from him and after doing that I started getting useful info through my email. After a day or so I think I received a link to a great ebook that explains how you can become a pro blogger and start earning the money you should be making online.

I am not going to give away Jack’s info here so you need to take the time to sign up but I am just itching to tell you.

Right after the introduction in his making money blogging guide he hit two points that immediately answered a couple of questions I had about a few money sites that aren’t ranking at all in the search engines. That right there was worth that 5 seconds it took me to sign up.

BTW: I really don’t like getting ebooks, even if they are free, when they are full of filler, images or extra large text. Well, Jack’s ebook is nothing like that and it’s only 29 pages long so even for an extremely slow reader like myself it was a short read. Again, thanks Jack.

I make my living online and even when the economy headed to the crapper my income never dropped. It is steadily increasing month after month. It makes sense to me though. I have hobbies that the poor economy isn’t going to take away from me. I still spend money on my hobbies and so do my friends. Other things seem to suffer before people let their hobbies and interests go.

So, if you are thinking this is a bad time to start blogging I would suggest you think again. Happy blogging.
