Note: Two things: 1) I am not a programmer and I don’t want to be. I just want to have a blog I can modify to make more money online and now I do. 2) I have not installed Thesis on this blog yet but I will get to it after I have learned on my The Joy of Hobbies blog.

I have the Thesis Theme for Wordpress on two blogs so far and I have just begun.

It’s only been a few days using Thesis but after just 10 minutes I was hooked. (Pun Intended) I knew right away I have made the right choice. The Thesis pack would have to explode or something huge for me to request a refund. Heck I almost feel like I should send the developers a Christmas present this year. Maybe just using it and promoting it will be enough.

Losing Sleep But Not Like Before Thesis

Before I purchsed my copy of Thesis I lost sleep trying to figure out how to be a better blogger and by that I mean I wanted to be able to manipulate Wordpress but it was more than I could handle most days.

Now I am losing sleep because I keep thinking about all the things I can now do with Wordpress because of Thesis, without the need for programming skills.

But the time I spend lay there now, not sleeping, is a happy time and I soon drift off, dreaming of my better blogs.

Before thesis I had not even heard about hooks, other than fishing hooks and hooks to hang picutres on walls. Now they are chaning how I view blogging.

So, what are these Thesis hooks?

Hooks are how Wordpress places code around your blog but until now they weren’t accessible to non-programmers like me. Think of it like wall hooks you use to hold up pictures on your walls and then think of each section of your blog as pictures on your blog.

Moving them and changing or adding to them, for me personally was a huge headache. I would fumble around until I got some things working but more times that it worked out it failed and I would have to remove any changes to put it back to what it was before I started. There, another bunch of time wasted and an increase in my stress level.

Now, thanks to Thesis, I can add to my blog or remove things, even change their location, without knowing any programming other than my awesome skills at copy and paste.

First let me just say that if you can copy and paste you will be just fine. I can do that and I have already created my first modification usign hooks. I did the modification in just a few minutes and now I have a subscription area so people can subscribe to my blog easier.

I made the change and then left to help a friend for a few hours. When I return I had 7 subscribers. Previously I had zero subscribers because I didn’t want to fight with the php code again.

Okay, the Thesis hook system is basically a set of basic commands that can be used to add to your blog or to subtract from existing code your blog, and modify the functionality of your Thesis installation. This is where your copy and paste skills will make you look like a real programmer.

WordPress has a huge list of hooks which is break down of every area of your blog. Take a look at all the hooks for Wordpress . Well that’s quite a list.

Now take a look at the Thesis hooks we can easily add snippets of code to for a better blog.

I have been copying and pasting code for a long time and have no problem doing that as it’s just like wordprocessing. The problem I was trying to get used to was knowing where to place the code I was pasting. That was the big stress in my life. Now, with Thesis Hook System placement is no longer an issue. It’s going to go in your custom_functions.php and that’s the only place you need to go, pretty cool.

I learned that I can add an action with a simple code, (add_action), or remove an action, (remove_action). The cool part is I don’t have to go into any of blog php files. It’s all done from within on custom_function.php file.

My first action to add was a subscriber area on the top of my sidebar #2.

It took me less than 10 minutes to follow an example and it was done. I kind of expected to be told I needed to do at least a little more but no. A couple of steps and I was done.

Before the day was done I had gone from zero subscribers to 7 subscribers without any promoting of my new section.

It just made it easier for my readers to see and click.

Now that little bit of work, less than 10 minutes is going to stay there as long as I want it to, bringing in new subscribers. Totally cool.

I blog for profit, even though most of my blogs are about my hobbies and interest, it’s still about the money. Now I can stop wasting my time.

I will be working on hooks for the next little while and will write more as I learn more, but in the meantime check out the Thesis Theme for yourself.

I remember back when I first started hosting my domains on private servers that I started keeping track of stats. I use Webstats in my control panel and I use AWSTATS.

I did notice that I had a value for visitors and a different one for unique visitors. It may sound clear as to what it means but back then I wasn’t sure I understood it so let me explain for you, just incase you are as green as I was back then.

Visitors vs Unique Visitors

Let’s say we have 1899 unique visitors and the number of visits is 3876. The lesser value, the unique visits are the actual number of visitors you had that month.

If you look at the difference between the total number of visits, 3876 and the 1899 unique visits you can see how many return visits you had which is 1977.

It’s nice to see that number of return visits is higher that the number of unique visits, but it can get way better than these numbers. Assuming you have good content people want to read then you just need to work on getting them to return.

It’s time to make your RSS feed more visible. Explain why people should subscribe to your blog feed. Make it easy of them to subscribe.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. Take a minute and read up on it. Not knowing about it may just being hurting your business.

Once I made my readers aware of the fact I even have a RSS feed and made it visible and easily clickable my number of return visits increased.

Just 5 to 10 minutes of my time, after not doing it for years, and I was increasing the number of visits to my site. I grew up hear not to put off until tomorrow those things you can do today, but I guess I didn’t listen close enough.

Give Your Visitors A Reminder About RSS Feeds

I have been working online since 2001 and couldn’t tell you how many sites I have left and never subscribed to because it just slipped my mind. The ones I remember to subscribe to land in my Feed Reader, Bloglines and I can see when the 100 or so blogs I follow have a new post. Those blogs get a lot of my attention, the others, well I may never find them again.

NOTE: It’s better to have people ignore your subscribe to feed options because it’s a choice, don’t let them leave without subscribing because you never took the time to add section to remind visitors of your feed.

I have just started using the Thesis Theme on a few of my blogs and the developers have made it pretty easy to add the Thesis Subscripton Widget . I had it setup in less than 5 minutes. I even went to Feedburner and added an email subscription option, the two steps only took 10 minutes.

So just 10 minutes of my time and I have it done forever on that blog. Now my visitors can see I have a subscription section right at the top of my sidebar.

A few weeks ago I was coding this stuff by hand, now I just fill in a couple of text boxes and I’m good to go.

• First, I logged into my blog Admin area.
• Next I opened the Appearance menu where I chose Widgets.
• Because I have two sidebars I had to choose which one I want to place the subscription widget in.
• Then I clicked the Subscription Add link from available widgets.
• I wanted it at the top of the list so I dragged it to the top of the list on the right.
• I then clicked the Edit link on the widget and filled in the blanks.

There were 4 boxes, I only needed the top 3.

Text box #1: Give your subscription widget a name. I used ‘Subcribe to my Blog’.

Text Block #2: It is useful to enter a description so those that don’t know what a subscription means when we talk about blogging.

Text Box #3: Here you can put the text you want your feed link to say. Example: ‘Subscribe Now!’. It works for me.

In my case I choose to use the 4th box to add my email subscription link from Feedburner, but it’s not necessary and would be for another post on another day.

Get your feed subscription setup and watch your visitors grow.

From An Ex-Frustrated Blogger

Let me start by saying I am not a programmer or coder by any stretch of the imagination and trying to just frustrates me. It also costs me valuable time, which for me is money and I still don’t end up with a professional looking blog. Doing this with 20 or 30 blogs consumes way too much of my time.

I do spend a lot of time, well I used to spend a lot of time, looking for blog themes that fit the niche I am working on so I have less to do but that takes time also because their are thousands of them out there.

Even after finding a nice looking blog theme I still have to add plugins and make changes I don’t feel comfortable changing. It makes for more stress that I care to deal with, if I wasn’t making money at blogging.

A Visit To Jack’s Site Changed My Blogging Life For The Better

I like Jack Humphrey, because he has a lot he can teach me and I am all about learning things that will help the bottomline. About a week ago I was on Jack’s site and learned about the Thesis Theme for Wordpress blogs and my blogging life changed.

It would have changed instantly but my skeptical side just kept screaming in my ear that this was just too good to be true. I have to say I was more than skeptical. In it’s simplist form it’s a Wordpress theme but not like any theme I have ever seen or used as it goes far beyond any normal theme.

This isn’t a turtorial, just a guy who went from skeptic to a very excited user in just minutes.

Thesis Has Powerful SEO Options

The Thesis Theme is a Wordpress theme that has SEO options that let me set the title, description and tags and keywords. I can now drop a few of the seo plugins I use that also took up more of my time installing, learning and using. You will find a vidoe that explains this on the Thesis Theme page.

Easy To Use Design Options

The Thesis Theme has tons of options, so many they would boggle the mind if they were put into easy to manage sections. I have had plugins that were so complicated that I deleted them. Perhaps if they had categorized all their options like I see in this theme I would still be using them. Oh yeah, there is a video to show that stuff also.

My Favorite, In Post Options

Right from the first post I added after installing the thesis theme I noticed there we any options on the page that were not there in other themes I have used. Options I would have had to install more plugins to use.

Immediately below the content window was another option for a title tag. Even though the title is above the post box as usual. I thought this was strange so I clicked the plus sign for more info.

Believe it or not it’s an SEO thing. I can have a title, different from the blog title, which gives me more SEO capablities.

Example: Title: Keep Your Koi Fish Happy

Normally that would appear in the title bar of your browser but with this new title tag option I can have the existing title show above the post on my blog yet have a different title on the title bar.

Something like: A Happy Koi Fish Is A Healthy Koi

Maybe not the best example but hopefully you see the potential for SEO there.

You also have boxes for meta descriptions so that you have control over what appears in search engine results. That can easily make the difference between getting click in the search engine or just ignored like so many others.

The Coolest of Options, For Me Anyways

This morning I was going through all these great options as I was scrolling down the post edit page and came across the Multimedia box. This one feature impressed me enough I may have just bought this theme for this one single feature.

I can now add video to each post and have it appear in the side bar of my blog. I have seen sites that do this and I just scratch my head. I have even tried to do it myself but just get lost. Not any more!!

Now I can go to my favorite video site, that share the embed code and put it into the Multimedia box and hit update. Just that simple. Blew me right away. I actually had to get up and walk away from my computer I was so excited.

I have only started working with The Thesis Theme and I am learning to do things that I just wouldn’t have bothered with a week ago and it’s easy.

See this is why I love Bloglines for keeping up with the newest posts on the blogs I follow. I could have spent all morning going through the blogs I follow just to find one or two good post like the one I read about Google Insights.

A few minutes ago I opened Bloglines and there was Ben Johnson’s Blog starring me in the face with a new post that grabbed my attention.

If you read the title of this post you know what Ben was talking about in his post then and it’s well worth the few minutes it took to read.

As soon as I was done reading Ben’s post I logged into my Google account and started using it, immediately. It was very simple and straightforward to use. Of course I have a lot more to learn but I was able to see results that will help me change my focus a bit and that can make the difference between earning a little or a lot.
