Working online today is nothing new. As a matter of fact many people today are looking into starting their own work from home online business.

When opportunity knocks you don’t want to miss it. Lots of work from home moms and dads today are already staying home to raise their children, why not make extra money while you’re at it.

There are certainly plenty of work from home suggestions which make it easier to find a niche that’s right up your alley.

The big problem with work at home ideas would have to be all the marketers claiming it’s easy to make money online, when they aren’t making it themselves. One has to be on guard for scammers.

But today’s article isn’t about whether you can make it online or not, that’s going to depend on the research done. I would however like to talk about being ready to start at a work from home idea.

How To Get Ready To Work From Home

1. It’s Hard To Work In A Noisy Environment

Maybe this is just me but I have a hard time working when it’s noisy around me. By that I mean noise other than a little quiet music in the background.

For me to make money online I need to be able to think so I can do my research and write content efficiently.

Our work at home online business began from our little kitchen table and it gets a bit noisy there making it tough to keep calm.

Once we moved into a bigger apartment, with an extra room, I finally had a room with a door I could close for a bit of quiet. Although that didn’t solve being interrupted in my office.

2. Put A Big Do Not Disturb Sign Up

Before I started to work from home there was never a problem with being interrupted so it took some time to get my son and wife to let me work in my new office.

After a few weeks of me getting frustrated with being bothered with little things while trying to work I went out and got a “Do Not Disturb” sign for the door.

It was enough of a reminder and I was able to focus much better. I do come out of the office periodically to stretch and to say hello to everyone. That’s the time they can blast me with all their questions.

3. I Have To Schedule My Work Hours

Not everyone is going to want to work from home full time like I do now so time is going to be even more precious.

I get up really early so that I can have my day over while I’m alert so I kind of get up with the birds. It’s so quiet then I can get a couple of hours in before I even hear cars outside.

For those working from home, after they’ve worked outside the home all day it’s even more important to have a work schedule where you won’t be disturbed. You will accomplish much more with a routine.

4. Keep Your Work And Work Area Organized

I am what is known as a piler because I just keep piling things on top of other things I’ve done. It can get quite unorganized. Even though I say I can find anything in an instant.

Learn to stay organized, even if you have to take a course. It’s worth the invest of your time and money to become organized. Before things get overwhelming.

Get organized right from the start and you will find it less stressful and confusing the bigger your online business grows.

Think about it. To effectively work a niche you will need to do research to find the best keywords to use in your articles. Actually you will need hundreds of words and once you start writing, if you don’t keep things organized it’s going to become frustrating.

5. Start With Baby Steps

I started my work at home business and went way to fast and too on far too much. Nearly drove myself nuts before I admitted to myself I was in way over my head.

Trying to keep up with everything I was doing was keeping me up late at night and was catching up with me. My progress was getting slower and slower while my sites were getting less and less traffic.

I eventually had to take a step back and then drop a number of the sites I was trying to run. The idea that more was better was quite true.

I needed to learn to walk with online marketing before trying to run with it. A lesson learned the hard way.

Online business is something you can work from home and be successful at, just take it one step at a time and take good notes so you can always see where you’ve been, where you are and where you are headed. It makes it a whole lot easier to fix things that way.

As an article marketer I feel I need to talk a bit about the poor quality of articles from some authors. I’m not really sure what they are thinking, or if they are thinking.

As an article marketer, working many niches, I have written some articles with regards to writing articles, revealing numerous problems I have had to overcome through the years.

My article marketing business started prior to article spinning software like The Best Spinner coming on the market. Before article spinners I wrote and rewrote each article manually making sure each article read like an educated human wrote it.

Keep A Strong Keyword Focus

Over the past few years I have talked about the importance of writing articles with a strong keyword focus. I’ve also explained that it’s vital to write helpful article for your readers.

Use A Variety of Keywords in Your Hypertext

I’ve talked about the significance of using hyperlinks that are keyworded pointing back to your relevant pages making sure you’ve varied the keywords for your hypertext.

Search engines today are much smarter than years past and expect to see natural variations in hyperlink text.

Using Article Spinners

I have discussed using software for spinning articles such as The Best Spinner, the spinner I choose after looking at 3 or 4 others.

Don’t Forget The Spell Checker

I personally find it unprofessional to leave spelling mistakes in articles, especially if you are trying to make money. I can get past one or two and have even let a few slip though myself but when the entire article is full of typos something is wrong with the writer I think.

This morning I was looking on a few article networks for articles I could use on a couple of blogs and came across a few articles that were full of typos. Heck even simple words were wrong but what really caught my attention was the keyword focus. They even had their keywords spelled incorrectly.

Welcome to my work from home business. Just got back from a great fishing trip with my buddy Jamie. A little smallmouth bass fishing helps to keep my young, it always helps when I kick his butt at fishing.

Article marketing has been the greatest way to earn money online for as long as I’ve been working online and I started back in 2001.

Article marketing is something you can work from home and make extra money with. I make my living article marketing. It’s something that can be done for free although doing it free can be very time consuming if you want to make good money at it.

All you need is time, a willingness to work and you can follow instructions.

My goal with this article is to teach you how I work from home and make my living on the Internet with article marketing. This way you can avoid the mistakes that have held me back over the years so you can go right to making money instead of mistakes.

Before we continue I need to add a little disclaimer because in my experience most marketers have trouble following a plan so they keep changing plans and making little to no money at all. So here is my disclaimer:

“I can not promise you will make any money.”

Key #1 – Learn To Follow Instructions

I’ve done it myself, too many times. Start following instructions and somewhere along the line I stop following the instructions thinking I have it under control, only to find later I didn’t. Sometimes I had moved so far off track it was just easier to start over.

So the first step to being able to work at home and make money online successfully, in any niche, is to learn how to follow instructions.

Following instructions doesn’t mean you won’t make mistakes. But when you are following a plan and make a mistake it is much easier to back track to see where you went wrong. Winging it on the other hand leaves one confused trying to back track to find mistakes.

This is a huge part of why people try and try and then just give up. They just can’t seem to keep on track by following step by step instructions.

Key #2 – Finding Your Niche

Following instructions can be vital to online success or any success in life but for business it’s really important to find a niche or market you know or are willing to learn.

If you choose a niche such as the make money niche you may have problems. If you haven’t learned how to make money online how can you tell others how to make money. Choose a niche that you know about and you will find success much quicker, in most cases.

Personally I like writing articles that have to do with my hobbies and interests. I can write articles all day long without getting writer’s block. For this reason I have money making sites in gardening, fishing, playing guitar , puppy training.

I started with the make money market like so many others and failed miserably, at first. Once I started focusing on niches I had experience in and started making money I saw how to make money. That’s when I started making money in the make money niche.

Finding A Niche: When I am looking for new things to promote I go to places like Amazon.com where I can find the best sellers in any niche in just seconds.

For digital products, ebooks, graphics and software, I love the Clickbank Marketplace. I even have a plugin for Firefox that makes finding products I can make money with a whole lot easier.

Key #3 – Find Your Best Keywords

Once you have found your niche it’s important to find the best keywords for your articles and promotions but it’s also important to learn about the top ten sites for those keywords so you know what competition you’re up against and what they have done to get there.

Researching your competitors is the most time consuming task but is worth the time studying.

I have researched competition and found places they have fallen short which gives me the opportunity to pass them in the search engines.

You can use free keywords research tools for your research, which is exactly what I did until I earned enough money to get paid tools. I used Google’s Free Keyword Tool for a while. It does take a lot more time and does far less than Keyword Elite 2 which I use now but it helped me find my best keywords.

Keyword Elite 2 also shows me what the top ten sites are doing for each of the keywords you pick. Before KE2 I would go to Google, conduct a search for my first keyword or phrase. Then I would check each of the top ten sites to see how they are using that phrase. Very time consuming but worth it for the positive results you’ll get.

Key #4 – Backlinking To Build PageRank

Once you have your niche picked out and have researched your keywords and competition it’s time to start writing keyword focused articles with keyworded hyperlinks or backlinks to your main pages.

Backlinking is one of the most important things you can do for your work from home online business. Be prepared because it will take a lot of backlinking to kick butt in a lot of niches and requires focus and a lot of articles.

Each backlink is a vote for the page the link is pointing to but without a strong keyword focus it’s going to be a lot more work.

When you check out the top ten sites, which are the sites you need to pass in the search engines, you will need to see what kind of backlink numbers they have. It’s the backlinks that push up the pagerank and search positioning.

Not all backlinks are equal. The text you use for backlinks you have in the articles you publish can make or break you. If your page keyword or phrase is ‘home gardening tips’ then your backlink text should use similar keywords and phrases. Otherwise you are diluting the keyword focus.

One needs to know the keyword focus of the pages being linked to so that the hyperlinks can match that focus. This is where you either make it or not so don’t lose focus at this stage, not after putting in all that research time.

At the same time don’t use the same keywords as link text over and over, vary them so they look natural to the search engines.

Now writing enough articles for a successful backlinking campaign means a lot of time spent on article writing. For this I use The Best Spinner so that I can write one unique article and from that spin many more unique articles.

I went from writing one or two, maybe three articles in an hour to writing one article and spinning dozens in the same amount of time. The Best Spinner is likely one of my smarter purchases as it’s allowed me to increase the number of sites I have without hiring writers.

Blogging Just To Share: I started blogging to share the joy of fishing with friends and family. When I started my blog I didn’t really expect a lot of readers as I only have a few fishing buddies and only a couple of family members who have an interest in fishing.

However, a few months later, once a few of my blog posts had been indexed in the major search engines I started seeing hundreds of reads per day. What a shock.

A friend I made online told I should have some ads and maybe make a bit of money with my blog. I gave it a go with a few banner ads and made a little money.

Next I started finding affiliate programs that would help me promote products I use personally when I go fishing. Income from the web site started increasing and I started building more hobby blogs.

No Fancy Office Required

I started article marketing from our little kitchen table here in Moncton, New Brunswick. It was the noisiest place I ever lived and actually hated it there. It didn’t take long before we were able to rent a duplex in a better part of town.

In just a few short months we went from hating where we lived to living in a nice quiet duplex and I even had my office.

Three years later we were able to buy the home we have now. No more renting and we actually purchased two lots and now we have a big vegetable and flower garden on the other lot. I even have a few gardening blogs I share gardening experience through and make more money.

We started in a two bedroom apartment with a noisy drunk living under us and people with steel shoes living above us. Then we went to renting one half of duplex with three bedroom, giving me my first real home office. Then in just 3 years we were able to buy our own home with an extra lot, right in the center of Moncton.

Article Marketing Potential

I have learned that there is huge potential for making a living online using article marketing. The trick to making money sooner is to find niches you are knowledgeable in which don’t have every money making keyword phrase tied up.

I use a few paid tools that help me do my research faster and to create keyworded content faster as well.

First I use places like eBay, Amazon and Clickbank to find what’s selling the best in the niches I have an interest in. Once I have established the niches I can make money in I start researching keywords and competition using Keyword Elite 2.

Once Keyword Elite has shown me my best niche related keywords I start writing articles focused on those keywords. The thing is one article isn’t going to cut it in today’s online marketing world so what’s a marketer to do?

The rules for article marketing today have changed thanks to Google’s duplicate content slap that hit a lot of sites and took them out of the running for a bit. What was acceptable before that has now kind of become taboo, as far as Google is concerned.

If you decide to ignore the facts you’re on your own. By the time of the slap I was already done with duplicate content. I went from rewriting articles to about 30% to 50, then 60% and now I try to rewrite or spin my articles until they are more than 90% unique.

You can imagine how time consuming writing everything by hand was. Then it was time to invest in an article spinner. I tried a few article spinners but today The Best Spinner is my spinner of choice.

Article Marketing Success Begins With Keyword Research

It’s been proven that effective article marketing has a whole lot to do with researching keywords in specific niches and certainly before writing a word.

Locating the right keywords is better than just using the top keywords in your niche. The resulting content may have you going in circles for months trying to figure out why you’re not getting target traffic that makes you money. It could actually take a number of years to get any ranking for top keywords in your niche.

Then I started finding keywords, using Keyword Elite from Brad Callen, that the big players can’t be bothered with but they produce enough traffic for me to make money with article marketing. You’re looking for keywords with lower competition yet enough for you to make some money.

Invest Time Finding Keywords You Can Rank For

Some people just focus on one keyword phrase or maybe two or three but really in most niches today one needs many keywords to make a good living. So instead of remaining a poor marketer meaning NO MONEY find the proper keywords and start writing keyword focused content. Use one or two keywords per article as it seems to work best.

Add Keywords In Your Sub Headings

I see so many articles that just run on and on without sub headings and that’s a mistake in more ways that one. Sub heading give your article structure plus it helps in search engine rankings if you keyword the sub headings. For me it makes it easier to scan the article for what I want.

Video Marketing: Create Some Videos From Articles

I read, a lot, and some times I have to read the same thing over a few times to get it so for that reason I prefer audio files or even better videos. I tend to learn more and faster with video. So take the time to turn your written articles into videos.

Big Tip: Don’t bother taking your articles and just make a video that needs to be read. That just makes people angry. Especially if you add some crappy music in the background. Heck I can take an article, put some music and read it without it being a video. That’s just being a lazy ass.

Break Long Article Into Multiple Parts

When I start writing I can end up with 1200 words pretty easy which is too long for most so I break them into multiple part articles. Do the same thing with your videos if they tend to run on too long. Just be sure it’s quality content if you’re going to split into multiple video articles.

In conclusion: Article marketing without a real keyword focus doesn’t draw target traffic which makes it hard to make money consistently. Just a little focused keyword research can make all the difference.
