Ad Space for Sale. Should Those Paying For Ad Blocks Have Their Ad Above the Fold?

Posted July 7, 2008 , By webmann

your-ad-hereThis morning I was browsing the rss feeds I have subscribed to and found a site that had ad blocks for sale on their blog. The only thing is that I didn’t see the ad blocks available until I scrolled below the fold.

How many visitor never actually scroll down? I go to many sites where I can see all I need to see without scrolling down, so I would never see those ads.

I personally tend to put ad blocks above the fold for those paying me for the ads. Other ad blocks are reserved for various affiliate programs I belong to.

Another thing I notice was that they had about 5 ad blocks available. I think this is a waste of space, not to mention that viewers might think it’s not worth their time if so many ad blocks aren’t taken.

I like to keep one ad block available. When it sells I then remove an affiliate block and put up another Ad Block for Sale Here image. People get more of a sense of urgency when they see just one ad block. When they see 5 or 6 they feel then can check it out later, but never do.

What are your opinions on selling ad blocks on your blog?

Apparently this person thinks more of content then advertising…..good for readers, bad for potential advertisers.

    A catch 22 indeed.

I totally agree with so many empty ad spots. i did the exact same thing until a colleague pointed out my mistake - basically telling me I was advertising my newbie’ness :-)

I did that same thing. I think I have 4 blank ads available and every time I looked at it something didn’t seem right.

Things go in and out of my brain so fast I always feel like a newbie.

They pay for it. They deserve to have them visible. It is your responsibility as the website author to make sure the ads fit into the site so it all looks good.

    Life’s tough.
