When I started my online business in 2001 I had no idea what affiliate marketing was, actually I hadn’t even heard the phrase at that time. I was buying ebooks with resell rights and reselling them. The money I earned was mine to keep and I was so enjoying the extra income.

That was all great and I wasn’t looking for anything else. Then my health when south when my family history came and bite me. I had a heart attack that nearly ended it all and there was no cure or operation, other than a transplant that would fix me.

Not to make this sound too depressing but the only thing they could do was send me back home with lots of drugs to thin my blood and to regulate my heart. That process sapped any energy I had and made my brain foggy as well.

The next 4 years were hell for me and my family but I lived and am so happy to be here. The drugs still keep my brain foggy and I don’t have much energy but I can still do a bit each day and that’s key to making the online opportunity work.

I decided to start blogging about my hobbies. At least this way I could drawn on memories and not so much on trying to learn new things. Then I heard about affiliate marketing and learned that the combination of affiliate marketing and blogging could make me money.

Our world today is going through some tough economic times and so many people are unemployed and looking for ways to make money, enough to even make ends meet.

Our son just went through months without work. Fortunately for him he was able to move back home with us. Unfortunately this isn’t an option a lot of unemployed people have.

It’s great to see others can work from home and make money doing it but not everyone has learned how to work from home and make a profit. I was one of these desperate people for a long time, way too long, but so glad I didn’t give up after my first failed attempt.

Part of how I make my money on the Internet today is through ebook resell rights also known as ‘other people’s products’ or ‘affiliate marketing’. The fact ebooks are such a great way to learn sure makes it easier to make money reselling them.

Not every one has a product to sell online. I am one of those online marketers who has no products of their own. This doesn’t mean I don’t have products to promote and sell though.

I use affiliate products, which are products owned by others who are willing to let me sell their products for then for a percentage of the sale or a commission. This give so many of us the option to earn money with other people’s products.

Promote and Sell Other People’s Products

Using affiliate marketing to sell other people’s products you can be unstoppable in just about any niche you’re knowledgeable in. If you were to start promoting and selling a new product every day, say in the home gardening niche and you would never sell all the available affiliate products in just that one niche.

One of my favourite niches is the home gardening niche as it’s a great way to save money and if you choose to blog about it you have a way to make money blogging. Niches or markets like home gardening are so big they are broken into sub niches so there are plenty of affiliate programs, products and services so that you’ll never run out of things to talk about and promote.

Affiliate Products Which Are Digital

I get almost all my digital products, which are ebooks, software and graphics, from the Clickbank marketplace. I’ve found ebooks to be great because I can read them right from my laptop, iPad or Kindle.

You will find other affiliate programs for digital products other than just at Clickbank. You might want to look at PayDotCom.com and eJunkie.com too.

You need to learn all you can about affiliate marketing and Clickbank is the place to look. It was there that I found the Super Affiliate Handbook by Rosalind Gardner and my online business life started making money. Rosalind Gardner is the go to person for all things affiliate marketing.

Non Digital Affiliate Products

Of course all products are not digital so I went looking for other affiliate networks that have physical products I can promote.

Even though I have tried a lot of affiliate networks they are not all a like so I have dropped a lot of them. Those I listed above are a few I have been making money with and use them in multiple niches like gardening and acoustic guitar.

So what ever your niche is you are likely to be able to find an affiliate program. If you can’t find an affiliate program for your niche I would step back and rethink the niche you’ve chosen.

Retirement can sneak up on you pretty quick and one can easily find they are not prepared for what’s to come. The thing is retirement doesn’t mean you’re dead and the need for money doesn’t stop.

It’s a bit embarrassing but for the sake of those reading this article I will admit I sucked at finances for many years. This has left us with no nest egg to enjoy retirement which means we either keep working, stay at home all the time or we could work from home as bloggers.

Retirement doesn’t have to mean the end of life as you know it. If you are willing to learn about work at home jobs you can do at any age. I started a work from home business that is based around my hobbies and make money doing it.

I don’t even have to be at home to run my work at home business. We love to travel so when we are on the road I share our travels though our travel blog. I even write off some of our travels and part of our home for our business.

It works out great as I like to talk about the things I enjoy, like my hobbies. My travel blog is just one of many blogs we have today. I like fly fishing, gardening, playing acoustic guitar and so many other things. There is always something new to talk about. I just do it with my laptop.

Blogging For Profit And Article Marketing

Blogging for profit works great because blogs are so accepted by search engines where we get all our traffic which our blogs convert into paying customers.

I will admit I struggle with this at the beginning due to lack of knowledge but just because we are retiring doesn’t mean we are brain dead, so I learned what I needed to know to make money blogging for profit.

Today I have over a dozen blogs, one for just about every hobby I have. My home gardening and fishing blogs make us the most income so far but the other blogs are gaining search engine traffic and growing as well.

The hardest part about blogging for profit, even after retirement, is picking the right niche to start blogging in. You want to pick a niche that you can talk about for a long time so you will be able to write blog posts regularly without getting writer’s block. I don’t have that problem, just ask Jenny.

Baby Boomer’s Can Still Learn, Right?

I am not only a baby boomer but I know many other baby boomers and have even taught a few how to work from home to make money online. So we know baby boomers don’t have to go brain dead after retirement and can even make money online.

Today we have so many ways to make money with a work from home computer and Internet access. I’ve said hundreds of times but the chance to work from my home and make money from the Internet is almost too good to be true, however it is a reality.

I Work At Affiliate Marketing

I put what knowledge I have together with other people’s products and services to create sites I can make money through affiliate marketing. To keep focused I stick to the areas or niches that revolve around my existing interest which are mostly hobbies.

Two places I make most of my earning is 1) Amazon.com, and 2) Clickbank.com.

I use Amazon categories to find products but I also use them to find niches I know about but kind of forgot about. Yeah it happens when you hit my age, you some times forget things you like.

And when it comes to digital products Clickbank has 10s of thousands of them in the form of ebooks or electronic books, graphics and software products I can promote and make money through my sites.

Because I am not exactly a passionate writer I prefer matching affiliate marketing with my interests as I can write about stuff I really like a lot, without quickly hitting a wall called writer’s block.

Already Have A Business And Want Traffic

When the Internet became available in Moncton I already had a work from home business as a web design and computer instructor. I found the Internet a great way to get even more local traffic.

Don’t let what I do lead you to believe you need to be a web designer to make money online, not at all. You don’t even have to hire someone like me to build you a website because today blogging is huge and you don’t need web design skills do start.

I do suggest you have a domain for blogging purposes and a hosting account to host your domain. For these purposes I use two companies which I have been using happily for years now. They are:

I use both Micro Niche Finder and Keyword Elite for my keyword research. They both do a few things that are different but for my work from business I feel I need both.

I use the Micro Niche Finder for keyword research to find keywords for very specific targets we call micro niches. When I am going to build a site based on one product I need the keywords that will make me money.

However when I am going to start a site like my fly fishing blog I want lots of money making keywords that don’t have so much competition that I can’t compete and for me Keyword Elite fits the bill perfectly.

My Opinion of Micro Niche Finder Is Biased

I really can’t help but to be a little biased toward Micro Niche Finder as it’s change how I look at micro niches. Now I make money with micro niches and have found Micro Niche Finder has made it easier and faster.

It didn’t take me long getting started. I had immediate access to training videos that explain all aspects of the Micro Niche Finder which cut the learning curve considerably. I just followed along with the videos and it all became clear.

Conducting A Micro Niche Finder Search

After opening Micro Niche Finder I I typed in my first phrase to see how the system works, still following the videos of course.

I also work in English so I set the language to English and because my audience is by far from the good ole US of A so I set the countries to US. Then all I had to do was click search and MNF was off getting related keywords for me.

I was advised that this could take a few minutes so once I started the search I headed to the kitchen for a sandwich and some more coffee. So loving being able to work from home.

My goal was to find some quality longtail phrases of between 4 to 7 words for a product I was interested in starting a site for. I don’t usually go with longer keywords as they tend NOT to be phrase used by people ready to spend.

Once I returned with my snack and coffee my keywords were waiting for the next step, according to the videos. And I was ready for the next steps.

SOC – The Strength of Competition Tool

Without really knowing the competition levels for the niche markets or micro niches how will you know if you can really make any money. Competition today can be fierce to say the least so you better know what you’re doing.

Use SOC to find the viability of the micro niche phrases.

How To Use SOC

The Strength of Competition option will allow you to check any or all the phrases you’re interested in. You can specify as single phrase by clicking the SOC link in the row your keyword is in from the SOC column.

As you scan through your keywords you can just click the check boxes on the left of the keyword for those you want to check. If you just wanted to select all you can click the link at the top of the window that says, “Check All”. You can of course deselect individual keywords or all of them as well.

If you are checking a lot of keywords this is going to take time. I just get started and then go about doing other things to help my business earn and grow.

Micro Niche Finder put each keyword into one of three categories, listed below.

1. Strong Competition – show as red ‘danger’ meaning it could be tough to gain on your competition.
2. Moderate Competition – shows as yellow ‘caution’ a moderately easy market to rank in Google.
3. Light Competition – show as green ‘go’ should be relatively easy to rank for this term in Google.

Micro Niche Finder has cut my research time down significantly and that’s exactly what I was looking for. Thank you Mr. James Jones.

Hide Results I Don’t Want To See

All the things you are going to be checking can get confusing if you can’t hide the results you don’t want to see. In MNF all you need to do is to use the big red X at the top of the screen to choose to hide checked or unchecked items, the choice is yours.

I usually hide unwanted results after each step I take in the Micro Niche Finder. BTW they are not gone, just hidden from view and become visible again when you want them.

I Need To Know Phrase Counts

Once I find the strength of competition using SOC, I need to know phrase counts. For this I just click the Phrase Count link top left. Now I can narrow down my list of keywords even more.

If I am investing my time to find just the right keywords for my micro niches I certainly want keywords that gain the traffic I require for success.

The truth of the matter is I chose this niche because I know how competitive it really is and thought it was the ideal test of Micro Niche Finder. I was certainly impressed with what I found and actually started a new site based on my results.

Today, after many frustrating months I purchased and read Rosalind Gardner affiliate marketing ebook called The Super Affiliate Handbook. It has changed how I run my work from home business.

I couldn’t believe all the things that I was doing that just wasted my time because it didn’t lead to earning money. I made some sales but not because I knew what I was doing.

I’m not really sure how many times I’ve seen The Super Affiliate Handbook reviews and just ignored them figuring I was almost there on my own, but I wasn’t even close.

Know The Products You Promote

My first attempt at affiliate marketing online ended with a big disappointment. I didn’t have the money to buy products and evaluate them. I was broke and needed money fast. The resulting articles I wrote really had not detailed information about the product and as a result I made very few sales and those were weeks apart.

Move ahead a few years and I had learned a few things, most of which came from The Super Affiliate Handbook. Every so often I look back and remember the importance of “Investing The Time And Money To Learn To Earn” and wonder what I’d be earning today if I had those first couple of years back.

I like to promote ebooks because they are affordable and can sell really well. Add to that I usually get my ebooks from Clickbank and can always get a refund if the quality of the ebook I just purchase is less that acceptable. For me it’s a win-win situation.

Share The Positive And Negative Things

When I read a product or service review and only see positive aspects I get suspicious. It looks to me that they want to see the product more than they want to give a complete review. It also makes me think that perhaps this product has problems that the reviewer would rather not mention.

Share the positive and what it’s done for you but also share those negative things so that your reader is fully informed. Personally I want to know both sides if I am going to give up my money.

Keyworded Content is King

I have believed content is king for many many years, long before the Internet was around. It’s just that in my mind the content has to contain quality information or it doesn’t fit my idea of KING.

I read a lot of articles but I also leave a lot of articles, sometimes before I get through the first paragraph. If an author can not take the time to write quality content and decides to use a spinner to create unreadable content, well I just leave.

NOTE: I personally use The Best Spinner to spin articles so I am not saying article spinning is wrong, not at all. I am saying that in my opinion it’s wrong to create content that’s spun to the point it’s unreadable and then hundreds and thousands of those crap articles are published all over the net.

The answer is simple. STOP and take the time to proofread each and every article you publish. Make sure it reads like you wrote it, not a piece of software. Don’t let your keywords be spun into something useless. Think of your visitor who is going to try and read your content.

Research Good Keywords

Keywords are the words that are key to making money in the niche you’ve chosen. There are keywords that would take you years to rank for so you might want to research your keywords to find out the keywords you can rank for now, while you build authority and ranking for those tougher keywords.

Keyword research can be quite time consuming but is so vital to anyone’s success in affiliate marketing. Especially if your goal is get free or organic search engine traffic to make money.

Learn Who Your Competition Is

Many think they have millions of competitors but in reality you are really only going after those at the top of the search results pages of Google. At least the top ten positions and maybe even the top twenty spots. Learn what they are doing and duplicate it.

For learning my keywords and competition I use Google’s Free Keyword Tool as well as Keyword Elite which will show me what the competition is doing to get their position in the top three search engines, Google, Yahoo and Bing, although I am all about Google traffic.
