I’ve been enjoying the benefits of affiliate marketing and the Internet for quite some time now and what started as a single non targeted website has turned into focused blogging for affiliate cash.

At the moment I have 12 sites on the go, ten are built around my hobbies while the other two are make money sites where I share what I’ve learned over the years of online marketing.

I started with an idea to work from home and make a full time living. It wasn’t as easy as it played out in my head but eventually I learned what I needed in order to make money with affiliate marketing.

It All Began With Some Niche Research

Looking back it would have probably saved me a lot of frustrating moments, so do start with niche research, as it’s very sound advice. Can you tell that I didn’t really start with niche research?

It took a while but I came to understand research was the best route to go as guessing wasn’t making me anything more than frustrated.

Blogging About Things You Really Enjoy

After spinning my wheels for some time I gave researching niches that matched a few of my hobbies a try.

I found that fly fishing was an area I could work for years so I started my first fly fishing blog. Later I added a second blog to the site for fly tying.

It was so much easier writing content for a niche I lived in for half the year, fishing.

I created articles for both blogs for almost 3 months and had a couple of hundred unique readers per day so I monetized my blogs with a few affiliate products and started making some money.

That little bit of success, which only came after I decide I needed to learn how to make money with affiliate marketing, gave me the confidence to research another hobby and soon started my backyard gardening tips site.

It really is easier to keep my readers coming back when I enjoy writing and can create quality content.

The lesson learned for me and one I would like to share is “Research Your Niches”. Learn how to become a super affiliate and you will be able to work from home and make your living online.

“Think a year or two down the road. Will you still have something to say about the niche you’ve chosen.”

Credibility Is Really Important Today

I don’t often purchase from a site I have just found, unless of course I have been given the site address as a strong reference from someone I trust. It usually takes me a few visits before I feel I can trust.

However for many sites I have no problem deciding about whether to trust them or not. I just leave because a few red flags scared me off immediately. I do have a few expectations when I am on a site, well when it comes to business anyways.

Some of the reasons I reach for the back button:

• Site is not on target with the keywords I used during my Google search.
• Categories cover all possible niches and categories
• Content doesn’t reads like a human wrote it
• Too much going on other than the article I am trying to read. Too flashy.

I think of it this way. What do you have that’s going to keep me on your site?

Today I feel so blessed that I am able to work at home making money online blogging, even though I am just a year away from 60 and only have a grade 9 education. This just shows me that just about anyone willing to learn can make money online.

I don’t know where you’re from but in my neck of the woods that’s pretty darn cool.

I won’t go into the long boring story about why I quit school and ran way from home but let me tell you that by the time the Internet became available I was so itching to quit my low paying day job.

I Thank God For The Internet, Every Day

With little education most of my jobs didn’t require much of my brain. This gave my brain the opportunity to do other things while I was working hard labour jobs.

I had a computer and then the Internet. So I began looking for ways to make some money online and maybe not have to work  so hard. Don’t get the idea I was lazy because I was always the harder worker.

The first thing I did when I got the Internet was to learn how to play guitar. During that time I also learned about web design and started building web sites for friends in my off hours.

In no time I was able to quit my day job and began to work from home as a web designer.

I went from working 8 hours days of hard labour to night day on my butt as a web designer. Yeah I had lots of money but was exhausted and had no time off for family.

Oh yeah, over the following two years I put on more than 60 pounds because I went from hard labour to sitting on my butt snacking and working. I had to find something else as my life was out of control.

Even though I was a web designer I had no clue about optimization or online marketing so I had to start studying and that led me to Clickbank.

The Clickbank Marketplace Rocks

I stopped taking on any new web design clients and focused on learning for a few months. It was so great that I was working from home as it gave me the time I needed to find a way to make money through the Internet.

I soon learned about Clickbank, well actually the Clickbank Marketplace. I was glued to it looking for ebooks that would teach me the skills I needed to have a successful website.

I started learning about Internet marketing, affiliate marketing and ebooks with resell rights.

Today I have many sites, mostly blogs which are mostly focused around my hobbies and interests. Below are a couple of examples of my sites.

Example 1: I am a fishing nut and can’t seem to get enough. I always wanted to make money from my love of fishing but life didn’t take me in that direction. Today, many years later, I now make money blogging about my fishing fun.

Example: 2: As far back as I can remember I wanted to have a garden to grow things I love to eat. It only took me until I was 50 to get there. I started saving money gardening vegetables for home and guess what… you got it. I started a gardening blog and now I make money with that hobby as well.

Invest Your Time And Money

If you are looking for a way out like I was a few years ago then my advice to you would be to take the time and learn how to make money online. The Clickbank Marketplace is the place to start looking.

The reason I recommend looking at Clickbank is two-fold. 1) because you will find a variety of ebooks on the subject of how to make money online, 2) if need be you can get a refund.

Before you invest any money I would look for reviews on the products you’ve found at Clickbank. Look for pros and cons that will give you an idea of whether it’s an ebook for you or not.

The thing is that most reviews can be misleading, because they want you to buy it from their link so they can make money. So use good judgement and go through as many review as you need.

Is It Worth It?

It is so worth it but it will require work and dedication. The dedication part is why I go for my hobbies and interest. I don’t have the problem of losing interest in those niches.

I have started blogs in niches outside my interest and it was hard work. As hard as I tried I would lose interest and let the sites slide. This may only be me but I have a hard time focusing for long periods of time on things that don’t hold my interest.

Online marketing today is really a global phenomenon as more and more people are trying to find ways to make enough money to make ends meet.

This is great news for those around the world looking for any way to bring in enough money to survive when there are few jobs to be had.

Where To Start: I have discovered I get my best results when I work niches I know a little about. However since starting affiliate marketing I have used the Clickbank Marketplace to learn about things in niches that are new to me and now I earn even more income online.

Step One To Affiliate Marketing Success

When I started thinking about a work from home job as an affiliate marketer I was advised to start writing down topics I know stuff about. I immediately went brain dead so I just carried a pen and paper around and wrote down things as they came to mind.

Start with your skills and then move onto your interests. Don’t hold back, just keep writing things down. You can evaluate your list later but for now just keep writing things down.

I can’t stress how important it is at this stage to avoid evaluating your ideas before you finish your list. It’s like brain storming. No one puts down any ideas that come to the table, until after the listing phase is complete.

Once you have a list of possible money makers you can start looking online to see what kind of potential there is in that idea as well as the amount of competition you’ll be up against.

Competition is good but too much competition could mean you will have to work a long time without any positive results and that can lead to depression and giving up your new dream. Invest the time researching your ideas so that you find at least one idea you can run with.

You Don’t Need To Be An Expert In Most Niches

If I had to be an expert in all the niches I make money in I would have given up long ago but all you have to do is learn how to marketing affiliate products to your readers.

Affiliate marketing, even if your not an expert, can help you make a living online. I know this is a fact because I do it on a daily basis, in niches that I am just not skilled in at all.

How I Make Money Affiliate Marketing

I really enjoy fishing but I have never been in tournaments. I don’t have a boat. Heck I don’t even own a canoe but I do have a float tube and fish when ever I can.

I discovered that I love gardening but I don’t own much more than a rake, a shovel and a desire to grow things and I make money online. Actually it’s my biggest money maker right now.

I love my dog, cooking, traveling and so many other things that I can make money with through affiliate marketing.

How do I make money in niches I am not an expert in? Well I love to tell stories, true stories about my experiences with things, like gardening, fishing and other interests. Guess what? People love reading stories that touch them in some way and I make money.

Let me share a short example:

When I am fishing, even though I have very little in the way of fishing tackle or fancy gear but I know how to read water. I fish with guys that have it all, way too much actually yet I am able to kick their butts at fishing.

Do you think they listen when I share some of my thinking? You bet they do. Sadly before affiliate marketing I didn’t make a red cent sharing my knowledge but today those same guys go to my web sites where I share even more tips and tricks and they follow my affiliate links and I make more money.

Publish Unique Niche Articles

It’s great to write great content for your site and to get it indexed in the top search engines. You can get a lot of traffic and make some money but if you start to get links pointing to those pages you can get even more target traffic and make a whole lot more money.

Start by creating content, quality keyworded content, for your site. Then start writing unique articles that you will publish elsewhere with keyworded links pointing to your related articles on your site. Doing this will help to increase your web site rankings and authority which when done correctly brings in even more target traffic.

Keep that process of writing quality keyworded content and articles pointing to that content and you can rule the roost in your niche, just like I am doing today.

Then there is Guest Blogging which is an awesome way to get backlinks and again more traffic which you can make more money from using affiliate marketing.

The key to your success is going to start with you creating quality niche focused keyworded content.

Using Article Spinning For Better Ranking

I spent a lot of years writing content by hand and then rewriting those articles into many unique articles I could then publish to article directories without creating duplicate content. To accomplish this task I purchased a copy of The Best Spinner to help me rewrite articles.

Note: I belong to a variety of article networks where I get content for blogs I work where I don’t have much knowledge. The thing that you need to understand is I look for quality so I actually end up rejected as much as 95% of the articles I review because they are poorly written.

The reason their articles stink so bad is because they use article spinners without proof reading the results, therefore they publish crap and get rejected.

Another reason their articles get rejected is due to publishing them to the wrong categories or because of including non relevant links.

I spend a bit more time rewriting articles but I very seldom have articles rejected and I never include non relevant links on sites I don’t own.

Affiliate marketing works for me. My income increases every single year. Affiliate marketing will definitely work for you, you just need to take the right steps and focus on content that’s original and unique. Oh yeah and don’t be afraid to tell it in a story.

I am an Internet marketer, I work at home full time, and during the decade I’ve been marketing online I have come to understand the importance of list building and the value of a good autoresponder service like Aweber.com.

You don’t want to lose your potential customer because of distractions on your squeeze page. The goal of a squeeze page is to get your visitor to give up their email address so you shouldn’t be doing anything else.

People do tend to put other options on their squeeze page. Maybe they aren’t interested in what you are asking so why not offer them more than one thing. Wrong thinking will lose you potential income every time.

Afraid they aren’t going to give up their email? That’s okay but instead of putting distractions on the squeeze page put an exit pop up there instead. So, when they go to leave the page they will be presented without another option.

Build A Good Looking Squeeze Page

Don’t get fancy with your squeeze pages. Just make them good looking, not to fancy and with just enough info to entice them to give up their email and any other required personal info. Just that simple.

There Are A Couple Of Great Autoresponders

I have tried a variety of autoresponder systems, some free and well as paid and after a decade of using autoresponder I have narrowed it down to just two that make me happy.

My personal recommendations: Aweber.com or GetResponse.com

Both these services have support and make it easy to get the job done right. Both have confirmation optin emails to avoid spammers.

How To Get Optin-Ins For Your Squeeze Page

First make sure you are offering great content so you’re readers have a reason to want updates. If your site doesn’t have good content why would a visitor expect to get quality emails.

So having a form to collect email addresses is no guarantee you’ll get any subscribers.

Make sure that what you are offering on your squeeze page is clear without clutter so there is no guessing on your visitors part.

Some things you could offer your visitors, through your squeeze page are:

• People like newsletters that offer specific info and offers.
• Write an ebook full of useful tips, include links to your money sites. This can net you a lot of extra traffic.
• Create an e-course teaching a specific aspect of something in your niche. Always keep it relevant to your niche.

Basically your success with squeeze pages happens when you give your subscribers exactly what they want, otherwise they will unsubscribe. If you have too many signing up and then unsubscribing you need to step back and see why they are doing that.

Once an online marketer has found their niche It’s time to focus on keyword research, before doing anything else. Doing your keyword search right up front will give you an edge when it comes to gaining search engine ranking and positioning.

Keyword research can be done manually although it takes a whole lot longer and newbies tend to get off track before completing their keyword research. That’s a big part of why I purchased my copy of Keyword Elite, time is money.

Manual Keyword Research Can Be Confusing

Personally I found proper keyword research to be time consuming as well as frustrating. I would start my research but after a few hours it was so easy to allow myself to get distracted. For that reason I had many sites, at the beginning, that just didn’t do well because I had lost my focus.

Let me give you a run down of how I used to do my research before Keyword Elite was added to my online business.

1. Find a niche I’m knowledgeable in.
2. Use Google’s Free Keyword Tool to find keywords
3. Find the keywords which have the least amount of competition yet still have Adwords ads appearing in Google’s search results pages.
4. Search my first keyword in Google and checkout the top ten sites to see what they do with the keyword.
5. Move on to the next keyword and follow step four again. I continue until I have researched each keyword.

What Am I Checking For?

When I search a keyword phrase during my research and then looking at each site I am looking to see what they do with that keyword. I check for the following things:

1. I like to check to see the number of competing pages for the phrase I am interested in.
2. Does the site owner use the keyword or phrase in their page title. Where do they place the phrase in their title?
3. What is the PageRank for the page that shows in Google’s search results for my phrase.
4. Where and how often do they use they keyword on their page. This is the keyword density and should be between 3 and 7 percent, usually.
5. Do they use their keyword in the ALT text for images.
6. Do they use their keyword as link text.
7. Do they use and keyword their heading one tag along with other headings.
8. Does the site have the keywords enhanced with bold, italics or both.

I would do this for every keyword I was interested in, which usually were a lot, so it was very time consuming. I usually gave up checking keywords long before I was done with the list. So glad when I was able to purchase a great tool for my keyword research like Keyword Elite by Brad Callen is.

Brad Callen has made my online business life so much more enjoyable now that I have KE2. Today I can do the same research today in a fraction of the time it used to take me and I end up with hundreds and some times thousands of more keywords for my niches.

In my 60 years I have learned a lot of skills people want to learn, in a lot of different areas, or as we call them today, niches. It’s great to use that knowledge to write blog posts but I also use my know-how to write ebooks and then give them away to get people’s email address.

You ebooks should include quality information to make it work. People will give you their email address for the ebook. They will even pass it around, if it’s good.

This gives you the opportunity to include links in your ebook that lead readers to your money pages and back to your blogs. This can deliver you a huge amount of traffic and help you make more income online.

The Money Is In The Email List

It’s true, the money is in the list if you learn how to make money with a list. The main key is to NEVER spam your list with non relevant content or too many emails a day.

I join lists to learn more about what I do or perhaps to learn things in a new niche, like my puppy training niche and how to play guitar niche.

The thing is I can get off the list in an instant if something sets me off, like non relevant info in the emails.

When I am creating lists I use either Aweber and GetResponse as they are trusted autoresponder services that make email marketing easy and safe.

My favourite niche today is sport fishing. As a sport fisher of more than 30 years I do know that other fishers are making lots of purchases in the sport fishing niche. The fact of the matter is most of us tend to over spend on this niche which is perfect for me.

I have been blogging about my fishing experiences for years now and each year I make more money because of all the posts from previous years. They just keep drawing free traffic from the major search engines.

Researching so that you know there’s money to be made in the niche is the first step toward your success. But that’s just the first step, you also need to know how strong your competition is.

How I Earn Money From My Niches

My goal is to make money with my blogs as I do this full time working from home so what ever I do needs to lead me to making money or I’m wasting my time. There is just me, no employees and I like having a life.

An Affiliate Product Sale Through A Story Example:

Last day of the year for the three of us, Ron, Kevin and myself. Late fall can be a very productive time of year as the bass and Chain pickerel are stuffing themselves here in New Brunswick.

Well we were out two weeks ago and were using red worms and just about anything actually but this day they were either heading south for the winter or being extremely picky.

After more than an hour without even a follow I decided to try something I used to use for Northern pike in Ontario and that was a big ole Red Devil.

First cast off to the side of the boat to see how it was running and it got smacked hard by a 23” chain pickerel.

My fishing buddies were all excited to see what I caught it with so I tried my best to keep it hidden and build on the excitement. When I finally showed them they both sighed but not in a good way. Neither of them had a Red Devil. I laughed out loud because I couldn’t believe they would not have a Red Devil.

We are fishing buddies so I had to tease them telling them it was the only one I had. Then I gave them each one but they were smaller than the one I had however after a few minutes it was obvious that size didn’t matter this day.

After a few hours of fish after fish I thought I would try a #3 Mepps. I knew the trout and bass love them, why not a chain pickerel. Just a couple of casts and I had a fish on.

I was curious to see if they had just turned on back when I first put the Red Devil on so I went back to use the baits we started with. The pickerel had no interest in them at all.

Our last day on the water for 2011 was spectacular and even better it wasn’t freezing cold, just comfortable. ‘Til next year happy dreams.

Notice I highlighted the name of the lure in red and bolded it. Those would be affiliate links leading my readers to where they can buy Red Devils or anything else once they get to the landing page and I commissions.

I would also include an image of the lure, maybe even a picture at the beginning with a chain pickerel and the lure hanging from it’s mouth. A picture says a thousand words and can help you earn more.

A Cookie With That Affiliate Link?

I am not referring to cookies you eat. I am talking about snippets of code used to remember you visited the affiliate site. This is not like your browser history and is a good thing.

When a visitor clicks your affiliate link the cookie notes you visited the affiliate page and my affiliate ID so that if the visitor returns at a later time the system remembers them and you get paid commission on any purchased they make. How cool is that.

The cookies can remember for weeks and even months after the initial click so you could keep earning as they keep returning to the affiliate page.

So affiliate marketing is an awesome way to make money or even your living, given time and some work. Start small and get it right before scaling up.

Blogging Just To Share: I started blogging to share the joy of fishing with friends and family. When I started my blog I didn’t really expect a lot of readers as I only have a few fishing buddies and only a couple of family members who have an interest in fishing.

However, a few months later, once a few of my blog posts had been indexed in the major search engines I started seeing hundreds of reads per day. What a shock.

Three years later we were able to buy the home we have now. No more renting and we actually purchased two lots and now we have a big vegetable and flower garden on the other lot. I even have a few gardening blogs I share gardening experience through and make more money.

We started in a two bedroom apartment with a noisy drunk living under us and people with steel shoes living above us. Then we went to renting one half of duplex with three bedroom, giving me my first real home office. Then in just 3 years we were able to buy our own home with an extra lot, right in the center of Moncton.

Article Marketing Potential

I have learned that there is huge potential for making a living online using article marketing. The trick to making money sooner is to find niches you are knowledgeable in which don’t have every money making keyword phrase tied up.

I use a few paid tools that help me do my research faster and to create keyworded content faster as well.

First I use places like eBay, Amazon and Clickbank to find what’s selling the best in the niches I have an interest in. Once I have established the niches I can make money in I start researching keywords and competition using Keyword Elite 2.

Once Keyword Elite has shown me my best niche related keywords I start writing articles focused on those keywords. The thing is one article isn’t going to cut it in today’s online marketing world so what’s a marketer to do?

There are some nice benefits available to the work at home affiliate marketer. One huge benefit I get to enjoy is being a work from home mom who gets to see her kids grow up.

No Need For Prior Experience

Other than being able to work from home to do your affiliate marketing you don’t actually have to have a whole lot of experience.

I did quite well with affiliate marketing because I focused on things I already know about. Mostly fishing related affiliate products. I am a bit of a fishing fanatic so I promote things that make my fishing experience all that much better and then share that info with others to make money online.

I Didn’t Even Need A Product of My Own

If we had to come up with products of our own I think a lot of online marketers would be looking for other ways to make money. Myself included.

I know a lot about fishing. Add the fact that there are millions of other who love fishing and the fact that there are hundreds and thousands of fishing related affiliate products, why would I ever want a product of my own.

It’s so much easier to find a good affiliate network with products you can promote. This way you just focus on getting as many eyes on those affiliate pages as you possibly can.

Heck, You Don’t Even Require A Website

That’s one of the cool things when it comes to affiliate marketing. It’s not absolutely necessary to own a website. You can just use your affiliate link to direct others to the affiliate page.

I personally prefer having my own website as some places you will try promoting won’t let you use affiliate links. So I use a redirect from one of my websites to get around this issue. Works great as a matter of fact.

Getting Your Affiliate Marketing Payments

Sadly not everyone online is honest like you and me. I have been taken a few times, it hurts and is most discouraging. But I learn, even if it’s the hard way.

Today I don’t deal with people individually when I comes to affiliate marketing products I promote. If they are not from a reputable network I don’t bother with them. That’s why I use places like Amazon.com, Clickbank.com and CJ.com (Commission Junction).

In closing, it takes a bit of planning and you can work at home as an affiliate marketer and do quite well, with only a little bit of knowledge. You can learn as you go and you don’t need to invest a whole lot of money building website. Instead build your business.
