Today I feel so blessed that I am able to work at home making money online blogging, even though I am just a year away from 60 and only have a grade 9 education. This just shows me that just about anyone willing to learn can make money online.

I don’t know where you’re from but in my neck of the woods that’s pretty darn cool.

I won’t go into the long boring story about why I quit school and ran way from home but let me tell you that by the time the Internet became available I was so itching to quit my low paying day job.

I Thank God For The Internet, Every Day

With little education most of my jobs didn’t require much of my brain. This gave my brain the opportunity to do other things while I was working hard labour jobs.

I had a computer and then the Internet. So I began looking for ways to make some money online and maybe not have to work  so hard. Don’t get the idea I was lazy because I was always the harder worker.

The first thing I did when I got the Internet was to learn how to play guitar. During that time I also learned about web design and started building web sites for friends in my off hours.

In no time I was able to quit my day job and began to work from home as a web designer.

I went from working 8 hours days of hard labour to night day on my butt as a web designer. Yeah I had lots of money but was exhausted and had no time off for family.

Oh yeah, over the following two years I put on more than 60 pounds because I went from hard labour to sitting on my butt snacking and working. I had to find something else as my life was out of control.

Even though I was a web designer I had no clue about optimization or online marketing so I had to start studying and that led me to Clickbank.

I stopped taking on any new web design clients and focused on learning for a few months. It was so great that I was working from home as it gave me the time I needed to find a way to make money through the Internet.

I soon learned about Clickbank, well actually the Clickbank Marketplace. I was glued to it looking for ebooks that would teach me the skills I needed to have a successful website.

I started learning about Internet marketing, affiliate marketing and ebooks with resell rights.

Today I have many sites, mostly blogs which are mostly focused around my hobbies and interests. Below are a couple of examples of my sites.

Example 1: I am a fishing nut and can’t seem to get enough. I always wanted to make money from my love of fishing but life didn’t take me in that direction. Today, many years later, I now make money blogging about my fishing fun.

I have started blogs in niches outside my interest and it was hard work. As hard as I tried I would lose interest and let the sites slide. This may only be me but I have a hard time focusing for long periods of time on things that don’t hold my interest.

The Replace Favourites doesn’t have the ability to understand context and for that reason doesn’t know which words and phrases NOT to use so your article can quickly become completely useless.

A huge part of my work at home online business revolves around quality and keyword focused article marketing. This also includes keyword focused backlinking. It’s been hard work that has paid off as my income for 2011 has double since just last year.

I write articles 5 days a week. I also do a lot of article spinning using The Best Spinner, to help me work faster. It’s up to me to work smarter though.

Using The Best Spinner I create articles and then spin them into spintax code I can use on these article networks in order to publish many more articles from my original article. This is where most article marketers drop the ball.

Here is how I produce articles.

Niche Research: As part of my niche research I find the keywords I need to use, keywords I can actually rank for, in order to make money. Then I start writing keyword focused articles.

When I use The Best Spinner to spin multiple articles I use a feature designed to protects my keywords from being spun to death. It’s actually right here that most article marketers make their big mistake.

Example: An article title that reads something like: Work From Home Ideas, could easily turn into something like, Labor From Residence Notions, which kind of destroys any idea of a keyword phrase.

Step One To Affiliate Marketing Success

When I started thinking about a work from home job as an affiliate marketer I was advised to start writing down topics I know stuff about. I immediately went brain dead so I just carried a pen and paper around and wrote down things as they came to mind.

Start with your skills and then move onto your interests. Don’t hold back, just keep writing things down. You can evaluate your list later but for now just keep writing things down.

How I Make Money Affiliate Marketing

I really enjoy fishing but I have never been in tournaments. I don’t have a boat. Heck I don’t even own a canoe but I do have a float tube and fish when ever I can.

I discovered that I love gardening but I don’t own much more than a rake, a shovel and a desire to grow things and I make money online. Actually it’s my biggest money maker right now.

How do I make money in niches I am not an expert in? Well I love to tell stories, true stories about my experiences with things, like gardening, fishing and other interests. Guess what? People love reading stories that touch them in some way and I make money.

Let me share a short example:

When I am fishing, even though I have very little in the way of fishing tackle or fancy gear but I know how to read water. I fish with guys that have it all, way too much actually yet I am able to kick their butts at fishing.

Do you think they listen when I share some of my thinking? You bet they do. Sadly before affiliate marketing I didn’t make a red cent sharing my knowledge but today those same guys go to my web sites where I share even more tips and tricks and they follow my affiliate links and I make more money.

Publish Unique Niche Articles

It’s great to write great content for your site and to get it indexed in the top search engines. You can get a lot of traffic and make some money but if you start to get links pointing to those pages you can get even more target traffic and make a whole lot more money.

Start by creating content, quality keyworded content, for your site. Then start writing unique articles that you will publish elsewhere with keyworded links pointing to your related articles on your site. Doing this will help to increase your web site rankings and authority which when done correctly brings in even more target traffic.

Keep that process of writing quality keyworded content and articles pointing to that content and you can rule the roost in your niche, just like I am doing today.

Then there is Guest Blogging which is an awesome way to get backlinks and again more traffic which you can make more money from using affiliate marketing.

The key to your success is going to start with you creating quality niche focused keyworded content.

Using Article Spinning For Better Ranking

I spent a lot of years writing content by hand and then rewriting those articles into many unique articles I could then publish to article directories without creating duplicate content. To accomplish this task I purchased a copy of The Best Spinner to help me rewrite articles.

Note: I belong to a variety of article networks where I get content for blogs I work where I don’t have much knowledge. The thing that you need to understand is I look for quality so I actually end up rejected as much as 95% of the articles I review because they are poorly written.

You don’t want to lose your potential customer because of distractions on your squeeze page. The goal of a squeeze page is to get your visitor to give up their email address so you shouldn’t be doing anything else.

People do tend to put other options on their squeeze page. Maybe they aren’t interested in what you are asking so why not offer them more than one thing. Wrong thinking will lose you potential income every time.

Afraid they aren’t going to give up their email? That’s okay but instead of putting distractions on the squeeze page put an exit pop up there instead. So, when they go to leave the page they will be presented without another option.

Build A Good Looking Squeeze Page

Don’t get fancy with your squeeze pages. Just make them good looking, not to fancy and with just enough info to entice them to give up their email and any other required personal info. Just that simple.

I have tried a variety of autoresponder systems, some free and well as paid and after a decade of using autoresponder I have narrowed it down to just two that make me happy.

My personal recommendations: Aweber.com or GetResponse.com

Both these services have support and make it easy to get the job done right. Both have confirmation optin emails to avoid spammers.

How To Get Optin-Ins For Your Squeeze Page

First make sure you are offering great content so you’re readers have a reason to want updates. If your site doesn’t have good content why would a visitor expect to get quality emails.

So having a form to collect email addresses is no guarantee you’ll get any subscribers.

Make sure that what you are offering on your squeeze page is clear without clutter so there is no guessing on your visitors part.

Some things you could offer your visitors, through your squeeze page are:

• People like newsletters that offer specific info and offers.
• Write an ebook full of useful tips, include links to your money sites. This can net you a lot of extra traffic.
• Create an e-course teaching a specific aspect of something in your niche. Always keep it relevant to your niche.

Basically your success with squeeze pages happens when you give your subscribers exactly what they want, otherwise they will unsubscribe. If you have too many signing up and then unsubscribing you need to step back and see why they are doing that.

In my 60 years I have learned a lot of skills people want to learn, in a lot of different areas, or as we call them today, niches. It’s great to use that knowledge to write blog posts but I also use my know-how to write ebooks and then give them away to get people’s email address.

You ebooks should include quality information to make it work. People will give you their email address for the ebook. They will even pass it around, if it’s good.

This gives you the opportunity to include links in your ebook that lead readers to your money pages and back to your blogs. This can deliver you a huge amount of traffic and help you make more income online.

It’s true, the money is in the list if you learn how to make money with a list. The main key is to NEVER spam your list with non relevant content or too many emails a day.

I join lists to learn more about what I do or perhaps to learn things in a new niche, like my puppy training niche and how to play guitar niche.

The thing is I can get off the list in an instant if something sets me off, like non relevant info in the emails.

When I am creating lists I use either Aweber and GetResponse as they are trusted autoresponder services that make email marketing easy and safe.

My favourite niche today is sport fishing. As a sport fisher of more than 30 years I do know that other fishers are making lots of purchases in the sport fishing niche. The fact of the matter is most of us tend to over spend on this niche which is perfect for me.

I have been blogging about my fishing experiences for years now and each year I make more money because of all the posts from previous years. They just keep drawing free traffic from the major search engines.

Researching so that you know there’s money to be made in the niche is the first step toward your success. But that’s just the first step, you also need to know how strong your competition is.

How I Earn Money From My Niches

My goal is to make money with my blogs as I do this full time working from home so what ever I do needs to lead me to making money or I’m wasting my time. There is just me, no employees and I like having a life.

An Affiliate Product Sale Through A Story Example:

Last day of the year for the three of us, Ron, Kevin and myself. Late fall can be a very productive time of year as the bass and Chain pickerel are stuffing themselves here in New Brunswick.

Well we were out two weeks ago and were using red worms and just about anything actually but this day they were either heading south for the winter or being extremely picky.

After more than an hour without even a follow I decided to try something I used to use for Northern pike in Ontario and that was a big ole Red Devil.

First cast off to the side of the boat to see how it was running and it got smacked hard by a 23” chain pickerel.

My fishing buddies were all excited to see what I caught it with so I tried my best to keep it hidden and build on the excitement. When I finally showed them they both sighed but not in a good way. Neither of them had a Red Devil. I laughed out loud because I couldn’t believe they would not have a Red Devil.

We are fishing buddies so I had to tease them telling them it was the only one I had. Then I gave them each one but they were smaller than the one I had however after a few minutes it was obvious that size didn’t matter this day.

After a few hours of fish after fish I thought I would try a #3 Mepps. I knew the trout and bass love them, why not a chain pickerel. Just a couple of casts and I had a fish on.

I was curious to see if they had just turned on back when I first put the Red Devil on so I went back to use the baits we started with. The pickerel had no interest in them at all.

Our last day on the water for 2011 was spectacular and even better it wasn’t freezing cold, just comfortable. ‘Til next year happy dreams.

Notice I highlighted the name of the lure in red and bolded it. Those would be affiliate links leading my readers to where they can buy Red Devils or anything else once they get to the landing page and I commissions.

I would also include an image of the lure, maybe even a picture at the beginning with a chain pickerel and the lure hanging from it’s mouth. A picture says a thousand words and can help you earn more.

A Cookie With That Affiliate Link?

I am not referring to cookies you eat. I am talking about snippets of code used to remember you visited the affiliate site. This is not like your browser history and is a good thing.

When a visitor clicks your affiliate link the cookie notes you visited the affiliate page and my affiliate ID so that if the visitor returns at a later time the system remembers them and you get paid commission on any purchased they make. How cool is that.

The cookies can remember for weeks and even months after the initial click so you could keep earning as they keep returning to the affiliate page.

So affiliate marketing is an awesome way to make money or even your living, given time and some work. Start small and get it right before scaling up.

New marketers with dreams of making money online with a work from home idea should really take the time to learn a few tips about optimizing web pages to get the best results.

By optimizing I am referring to search engine optimization also known as SEO. SEO basically means using the right words for your niche which are called keywords.

You also need to use those keywords in the right amounts called keyword density and also placing them in the right places for best effect. Get this right and you can attract the ideal money making traffic directly from the major search engines.

Of course getting this wrong can leave you spinning your wheels and scratching your head wondering where the traffic is or why the traffic is not converting to cash.

My suggestion is to find your niche, research keywords and look at the top ten sites for each keyword to see if you can compete for that phrase. There is a lot of competition and picking the wrong keywords can leave you broke.

1. Keyword Stuffing Will Kill Your Chances

Yes keyword stuffing, meaning you are using your keywords way to many times per article or post, can destroy your chances of success.

I remember the first client I had that didn’t understand anything about keywords but knew he needed a web presence.

I explained what keywords were to John and their importance. I then asked him to write a few pages of content for his new site.

John sent me an email with the content he wrote attached. He had stuffed every conceivable keyword he could come up with and not much else. I actually burst out laughing when I started to read it and was sure he did it as a joke, but he didn’t.

I gave him a call back immediately and found he hadn’t done it on purpose at all. He was a little embarrassed and confused but once I explained about keyword stuffing and the fact that a keyword density of 3-7% is fine we got things on track and now his site is live and he’s getting lots of business.

It’s important to be real and write your content as if you are talking to your reader.

Just in case you’re not sure about what density percentage is a 5% keyword density means you use 5 keywords for every 100 words you write.

2. Keep Your Keyworded Pages on Topic

I’ll admit I have messed up more than once and tend to get off topic rather easily so I know it’s important to stay on topic for best results.

The thing about getting off topic is that you reduce the value of your keyword focus for your niche and that means you could be losing potential traffic and money.

If you are blogging about puppy training then stay on that topic and don’t talk too much about your fishing hobby. Leave that for your fishing blog.

3. Avoid Black Hat SEO

I listened to the wrong guy a few years ago which caused Google to ban a few of my sites. That was the worse feeling to wake up to and left me wondering if I should continue marketing.

I had to do some scrambling to get my sites back in good graces with Google and trust me I don’t do the black hat seo crap any more.

The thing is most grey or black hat SEO strategies tend to abuse Google’s TOS. Google is King of search engines for a reason and they won’t let you get away with it for long and your sites will get banned.

It’s best to just stay within the TOS and work for your money like I do now.

4. Don’t Forget About The ALT Tag

A picture can say 1000 words may be true but search engines can’t read images yet but you can add extra content to your images that the search engines can read. This means you can explain what your image is and even use keywords.

In order to add text to your image code you have the ALT tag.

with each and every image I put on my web pages. I make sure I get an image that can speak to my visitor as a picture can be worth a thousand words but I don’t leave it there. I also use appropriate keywords in the ALT tag as search engines can read the ALT tag text.

Example: <img src=”/images/yourpic.jpg” ALT=”Your extra text and keywords would be added here” width=”200” height =”200”>

Again remember not to stuff keywords in the ALT tag.

5. The Title Tag For Your Text Links

Another method for adding content to your webpage, content search engines can read is through the Title attribute in your hyperlinks.

Example: <a href=”http://www.yoursite.com” TITLE=”Extra text and keywords can be added here”>keyworded text link</a>

Just like images can have an ALT tag or attribute hyperlinks or text links can have a Title attribute, which is basically the same thing. Use this attribute to add a bit more info about the link.

These five short tips can make a huge difference for your bottom-line. Just remember there are many ways to optimize your pages without doing things like keyword stuffing or black hat SEO.

2. Put A Big Do Not Disturb Sign Up

Before I started to work from home there was never a problem with being interrupted so it took some time to get my son and wife to let me work in my new office.

After a few weeks of me getting frustrated with being bothered with little things while trying to work I went out and got a “Do Not Disturb” sign for the door.

It was enough of a reminder and I was able to focus much better. I do come out of the office periodically to stretch and to say hello to everyone. That’s the time they can blast me with all their questions.

3. I Have To Schedule My Work Hours

Not everyone is going to want to work from home full time like I do now so time is going to be even more precious.

I get up really early so that I can have my day over while I’m alert so I kind of get up with the birds. It’s so quiet then I can get a couple of hours in before I even hear cars outside.

For those working from home, after they’ve worked outside the home all day it’s even more important to have a work schedule where you won’t be disturbed. You will accomplish much more with a routine.

4. Keep Your Work And Work Area Organized

I am what is known as a piler because I just keep piling things on top of other things I’ve done. It can get quite unorganized. Even though I say I can find anything in an instant.

Learn to stay organized, even if you have to take a course. It’s worth the invest of your time and money to become organized. Before things get overwhelming.

Get organized right from the start and you will find it less stressful and confusing the bigger your online business grows.

Think about it. To effectively work a niche you will need to do research to find the best keywords to use in your articles. Actually you will need hundreds of words and once you start writing, if you don’t keep things organized it’s going to become frustrating.

5. Start With Baby Steps

I started my work at home business and went way to fast and too on far too much. Nearly drove myself nuts before I admitted to myself I was in way over my head.

Trying to keep up with everything I was doing was keeping me up late at night and was catching up with me. My progress was getting slower and slower while my sites were getting less and less traffic.

I eventually had to take a step back and then drop a number of the sites I was trying to run. The idea that more was better was quite true.

I needed to learn to walk with online marketing before trying to run with it. A lesson learned the hard way.

Online business is something you can work from home and be successful at, just take it one step at a time and take good notes so you can always see where you’ve been, where you are and where you are headed. It makes it a whole lot easier to fix things that way.

The rules for article marketing today have changed thanks to Google’s duplicate content slap that hit a lot of sites and took them out of the running for a bit. What was acceptable before that has now kind of become taboo, as far as Google is concerned.
