How to Make Money at Home

Posted April 20, 2008 , By webmann

It’s sad but most of my friends live pay check to pay check just like I did for so many years. When we get together there is always a bit of talk about work and it almost always comes down to asking me how I make money online. The thing is they want to know how to make money at home but they don’t want to put in the time to learn how I do it.

When I started my online business I was broke and had just quit my job. If it wasn’t for my wife’s income I would have needed to get out of the house and get another job but getting another job was a problem. I have skills that are always in demand. The point was, I was so sick of working for others and being paid less than I am worth that I swore never to work for others again. Well that thinking made my first couple of years online rather painful.

So I suggest you don’t quit your day job and please trust me, this is good advice.

Would you like to learn how to make money at home?

I found that having yard sales was a good way to make money at home. As a computer instructor I was always buying products and books so that I kept my skills up-to-date. The thing I didn’t like about yard sales is the pennies you make. It would have been nice to be able to sell these items at better prices but people would just walk away.

In 2003 my yard sale days changed for ever when I was introduced to eBay, the worlds largest online auction.

How to Make Money at Home Selling on eBay

One persons junk is another’s treasure is so true on eBay.

My eBay life started by going through the closets, basement and garage looking through the boxes we had not bothered to unpack since we moved into our house, over a year ago. These boxes contained a lot of nick-nacks that relatives had given us over the years we have been married. I am sure you have a bunch as well.

These items were not junk or broken, just things that didn’t fit us so we hid them away like our wedding pictures. I don’t do so well infront of a camera so those pictures are kinda scary.

BTW: I didn’t try to sell our wedding pictures, they are still well hidden.

I checked with my beautiful wife so that I wouldn’t be selling anything she still treasured. I wouldn’t want to be sleeping in the dog house again.

I put my first item up on eBay and it sold for a lot more than I expected. I am sure I got 5 or 6 times what we would have made selling that same item at one of our yard sales and I didn’t have to sit outside watching people pick through our stuff.

I made boxes for the items using an exact-o-knife and the boxes we used to move. I made sure I packed each item so that it wouldn’t get damaged and returned. It worked for me as I had zero returns.

Now we stop at yard sales to see what we can get for nothing and then sell on eBay. It’s fun and can become quite addictive.

NOTE: I have a Paypal account so that I get paid right away. When I first started I got a lot of checks, Paypal is just so much quicker.

So if you want to learn how to make money at home then selling on eBay and getting rid of stuff you will never use is a great way to start.

NOTE: It’s early spring here as I finish this post and that means garage and yard sales. Take the time to visit a few looking for things that people are basically giving away and buy them if you think you can get a fair price on eBay. If you know a deal when you see it buy it and stock up. Then have some fun selling it all on Ebay.
