How to Choose the Right Social Networking Group

Here are a few tips to help you decide which networking group is best for you and your business.
1. Don’t assume that just one group is all you’ll need. Depending on the type of business, the tasks necessary to make it successful and the amount of knowledge you wish to gain and share with others, you may find you’ll benefit from joining more than just one networking group.
For instance, if your business is selling baby blankets, but you don’t know a thing about web design, but can write compelling sales copy, you may benefit from a group of physical product sellers, a beginner web design group and a copywriting group.
2. Don’t overwhelm yourself with more groups than necessary, especially in the beginning.
More than one group at a time can also be overkill if you aren’t ready to commit to them all at once. If you find that you only have time for just one, then only join one. You’ll quickly discover where you can get help in certain areas that aren’t offered in this particular group.
3. Look for a group that is made up of those in the same target market as you or who have the same goals for their business as you. Learning from others who “get” what it is you’re trying to accomplish is priceless.
4. Look for proven success. If you join a group and have never heard of any of the members, or don’t see proof of the things the group has to offer, chances are they aren’t getting what they need from the group or aren’t the type of people who are really serious about what they are doing and therefore have not implemented the resources available to them.
5. Talk to and ask questions of current members. If you know of someone who is in a particular group you’re considering joining, ask them what they like and dislike about the group.
6. Don’t immediately think free is best. As with anything in life, you get what you pay for. Yes, there are many free networking groups and message boards, but be sure you browse through some of the interaction at them before joining only to find you’ve wasted your time.
7. Many paid networking communities have a free trial period. Take advantage of those that interest you. You’ll quickly discover whether it’s something that would benefit your business.
No matter which networking group you choose, keep in mind that networking is a give and take relationship. You can’t expect to take, take, take and never give anything back to your co-members. Be active by asking questions when you have them and answering them when you can.
