I have been teaching web site design since the 90’s and designing web sites for clients since 2001. As a web site designer I have found that most new marketers don’t have a clue about web design. They may know what they want but not why they want it or how to create it.
If you enjoy creating websites, or you think you would enjoy web site design and you are a bit creative with an eye for design you could consider a career in web design. Web design is fun and financially rewarding.
As a web site designer I do several different types of work, including consulting with prospects and clients to determine what type of website will fit their needs, designing the web site, customizing blogs, and I even designing graphics for a few clients.
As a web designer I needed to know HTML, the language that websites are written in. When I first started in web site design I didn’t even have an HTML editor, the coding was all done by hand, but what an excellent way to learn how to manage code.
Today’s web designers don’t even have to know HTML, there are so many software choices available that allow you to just point and click making web design quick and easy.
What You Need To Get The Job Done.
- One important step is to have a computer with high speed internet access or you will be pulling your hair out.
- Next you will want to pick a good HTML or web site editor like Adobe’s Dreamweaver, Microsoft FrontPage, XSitePro or any of the free HTML editors you can find with a quick search in your favorite search engine.
- A working knowledge of HTML tags is only going to make your job easier.
- A graphics editing program such as Adobe Photoshop or Paintshop Pro (much more affordable), or Xara eXtreme (now my favorite) would also be helpful.
I don’t advertise in my local area but through word of mouth I get all the clients I can handle and have to turn potential clients away, as there is a strong demand for web designers. Many people, friends included, have dreams of starting their own online business, but they do not know a thing about how to build a website. They turn to web designers to help them get set-up online as well as maintain their sites.
Where Do You Start Looking For Customers?
Forums, if you visit a work at home forum, you are almost guaranteed to find someone asking how to get a website started or how to make their website look better, work better, or something of that sort. Go to your favorite search engine and do a search for ‘work at home’ +forum or something along those lines and you will find plenty of places to start looking.
Web design jobs can easily be found online through job boards and freelance work sites, such as www.elance.com. You may also want to visit some of the forums we mentioned above and network with people just starting out, as they are your target market. Don’t forget about targeting local businesses in your own neighborhood, as they need web designers, too.
You may even want to start a website that teaches some basic design principals and offer one-on-one coaching or group coaching to individuals who want to try designing their own website, but need a little encouragement along the way.
Some web designers charge their clients by the hour and some charge by project. If you decide to charge an hourly fee, you can expect to earn anywhere from $15 - $40 per hour. If charging by project, you can expect to earn between $20 - $50 per webpage or logo.
Web design can be a great career for those that like to be creative and design layouts. The internet is growing larger each day, and there will always be a demand for this type of job.
