Back when I was in college, I finally decided that I was going to be a writer. One semester, while taking a screenwriting course, my professor gave an interesting lecture. He told us that there aren’t as many successful writing mediums now days. The whole era of short stories and poetry is gone with the wind. He said if you can make a decent living writing short stories, then you’re one in a million. However, he did tell us who the really successful writers are. It’s the ones that craft screenplays or write fiction. These are what the public is interested in. Our modern society likes to read fiction novels and watch movies. That’s pretty much the end of it. Well, at this point I can’t say that I completely agree with that screenwriting professor. I now believe there are other ways to make money as a writer. And one of the keys to success is knowing the crucial resources for writers.

The World-Wide-Web has changed the game. For all of us who don’t have an interest in reporting the news or traveling to foreign lands as a journalist, there are still writing jobs out there. As I stated, you can try your hand at fiction or screenwriting. Although these writers generally make the big bucks, the competition is ridiculous.

If you’re looking to be a screenwriter, consider the fact that nearly 100,000 screenplays are registered with the Writer’s Guild every year. Yeah, you’ll have some vying to do. Now, I wanted to mention that there are alternative resources for writers other than instructional books on fiction or screenwriting. The web is an excellent source.

If you truly love writing and insist on doing it for a living, I recommend you try your hand at freelance work. I know writers who make 50-100 dollars an hour in this field. It’s all about selecting the right jobs and producing quality work for clients. Those who want REAL writing work done for them, will pay for it.

Take advantage of free, informative websites. Talk about resources for writers! There is oodles to learn about quality writing in cyberspace. And always remember your worth. If you went to college and acquired an English, writing or journalism degree, this puts you ahead of those who didn’t. Don’t settle for pennies when accepting a job! If the client could write the stuff himself, he probably would. Remember you are a professional and demand a real wage for your skills and services.

When ever I am looking for people that think like myself I look to forums in Google. Look up forums and discussion boards using keyword phrases along with the word forum, forums or discussion at the end of your search string.
